Blake Shelton has been open about how marriage and family changed his priorities, often pointing to his own upbringing as a guide for stepping into fatherhood. Over the years, the country singer has explained that becoming a father figure to Gwen Stefani’s three sons felt natural to him, even before the couple tied the knot.

While speaking at the 2022 Country Radio Seminar, Shelton called fatherhood “the most important role a man could ever have.” He shared that Stefani initially wondered whether their relationship could move forward, knowing it would mean Shelton becoming a parent to her sons, Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo.
Shelton said he never had doubts. He explained that his confidence came from watching his own father step into a similar role.
“My dad, when he married my mom — my mom already had a baby, my brother, Richie,” Shelton said. “He took Richie on and raised him from the time he was 1-year-old, and my brother never thought of my dad as anything other than his dad.”
Shelton told Stefani he felt prepared for the responsibility. “You’ve got three boys? Awesome! My dad did it,” he said. “My dad raised me. I could do this.”

After meeting on “The Voice” and marrying Stefani in 2021, Shelton expanded on his inspiration during an interview with KFROG’s “The Ride with Kimo & Heather.” He credited another influential figure in his life. “I have a stepfather in my life who’s one of my heroes,” Shelton said. “I love my stepfather, and I look up to him… so I have good inspiration in my life for how to do this and the kind of stepdad I want to be.”
Shelton has also explained how becoming part of a blended family changed his perspective on work.
“What I’ve been looking forward to doing for the last four or five years is eyeing that timeline… where I just need to start stripping some things away,” he said. “By marrying Gwen, I’ve married into a family… and all of a sudden, you go, there’s other stuff.”
In an April 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Shelton reflected on watching Stefani’s sons grow up.
“If I could have a repeat of these past 10 years, that would be perfect,” he said. He noted that as the boys get older, family dynamics continue to evolve, adding, “It’s gonna be a lot more alone time, which I’m not mad about that either.”
Shelton has emphasized that stepping back and listening became an important part of his role. “When people say it’s not about you anymore when you have a kid… if you’re doing it right, it’s not about you anymore,” he said.
He also shared that he enjoys introducing the boys to parts of his own world. “I get to teach them the country,” Shelton said, referencing life on his ranch and his love of music and the outdoors.
Speaking with People in December 2022, Shelton summed up his priorities clearly. “This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again,” he said. “Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously… you can’t buy time back. I don’t want any regrets.”
