CeeLo Green is heading back to “The Voice,” but fans will see him in a different role this time around. When season 29 premieres on NBC in spring 2026, the original Coach will return as part of a major format change rather than taking a seat in the red chair full-time.
CeeLo Green Returns to ‘The Voice’ for Season 29
Green was part of “The Voice” from the very beginning, joining the show in season 1 alongside Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine. That first group of Coaches quickly developed a reputation for being unpredictable and loose, something Levine has since laughed about.
“It used to just be kind of crazy,” Levine said in an interview with NBC Insider. “We were like the Rolling Stones or something. It was like chaos. CeeLo had a bird. We were like a punk rock band. It was wild thinking back on it; it was so out of control.”
Green coached during the show’s first three seasons and later returned in season 5. Now, he’s back again as season 29, officially titled “The Voice: Battle of Champions,” introduces a new approach. For the first time, the season will feature only Coaches who have all won the competition before: Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend.
The changes won’t stop with the Coaches. Every round of the competition, from the Blind Auditions through the Finale, will include new twists designed to raise the stakes.
Green’s role becomes especially important during the Knockouts. In the updated format, each Coach will bring back two Artists from past seasons to compete in an In-Season All-Star Competition. The Artists will go head-to-head, and Green will decide the winner of each matchup. The Coach with the most wins earns a major advantage by sending two Artists to the Finale instead of one.
The ‘Crazy’ Singer Balances ‘The Voice’ Comeback With New Music Era
Green’s return to “The Voice” comes during a busy creative period. In October, he released new music, including the single “Rest of Your Life,” which he says is meant to connect listeners across generations. The track was produced by his son, Kingston Callaway, and features an Atlanta bass beat built for movement and joy.
Speaking exclusively to Rated R&B, Green explained the deeper meaning behind the song. “My new single, ‘Rest of Your Life,’ to me, represents the line dance bilateral throughout time and space,” he said. “The very lineage of song and soul that brings us all, old and young, back to that relative place — closer together.”
Since releasing his album “CeeLo Green Is Thomas Callaway” in 2020, the artist has stayed active with standalone tracks and collaborations. In September, he dropped “We Want You Girl,” produced by Brazilian duo Tropkillaz, ahead of his appearance at The Town Festival 2025 in São Paulo.
“The opportunity to perform in Brazil again is huge,” Green told Rolling Stone Brazil. “I was intentional about making this happen, and fate conspired in my favor. I’m honored and deeply grateful.”
“The Voice” season 29, subtitled “Battle of Champions,” premieres on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 9/8c on NBC
