Fifteen years after helping launch the fan favorite series “The Voice,” CeeLo green is back but he’s trading his coaching jacket in for a gavel. As Season 29 moves into its high-stakes Knockout rounds, the original coach is stepping into a radical new role as the judge of the “All-Star Showdown,” a format-disrupting twist that gives the veteran artist more power over the competition’s outcome than ever before.
CeeLo Returns to ‘The Voice’ After Fifteen Years
CeeLo launched the series alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Christina Aguilera in 2011. He was known for his eclectic style, theatrical flair, and his companion, Purrfect the Cat. After taking Season 4 off (replaced by Usher), he returned for his final full season as a coach in 2013. In early 2014, CeeLo announced on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that he would not be returning to the coaching chair, stating he wanted to focus on his own music career.
NBCUniversalCeeLo has returned in 2026 for a unique, high-power role that differs from his original coaching days. He is joining as a mega mentor and an all-star judge.
CeeLo Imparts Game-Changing Wisdom to ‘The Voice’ Contestants
The rapper and songwriter told Extra,
“It means everything to me to be back on ‘The Voice.’ There’s a part of me that belongs here. There’s a part of me that’s never left.”
The founding coach dished some words of advice for “The Voice” contestants and young talent on the rise saying, saying,
“The best advice I can say in your pursuit of happiness is to take your time in a timely fashion. Don’t try to travel the shortest distance between point A and point B. Take the scenic route. You know what I’m saying? There’s learning curves there.”
He revealed that he is most impressed with the consistency of the talent on the show. He said, “Everybody that walks in the door is in full ownership of their identity and their individual account as far as their expression is concerned. And so there’s validity in all expression. And I can always appreciate that.”
What to Expect in the Knockouts
This round raises the stakes as the remaining six Artists on each team face off individually. Unlike the Duets in the Battles, each Artist now selects their own song to perform solo against a teammate.
NBCUniversalCoaches Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend will choose one winner from each pairing to advance to the Semi-Finals; the other singer is eliminated with no second chances. CeeLo will judge an “In-Season All-Star Competition” featuring former fan-favorites like Jordan Smith and Girl Named Tom.
Catch CeeLo Green returning on tonight’s Knockout episode at 9:00pm ET/PT. If you miss the live broadcast, the full two-hour episode will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.
