‘The Voice’ Contestant Passes Away at 36 Just Weeks After Devastating Diagnosis: Our Hearts Go Out

Dean Franklin, a former contestant on “The Voice” UK, has died after a short but intense battle with oesophageal cancer. He passed away on Sunday, just weeks after announcing he had begun chemotherapy.

The London-born singer, who was mentored by Paloma Faith during the 2016 season, had shared candid updates about his illness in recent weeks, drawing an outpouring of support from fans and the wider music community.

Family Shares Heartbreaking Announcement

Franklin’s family announced his passing in an emotional Facebook post.

“I never wanted to share this news with you all so soon,” the statement read. “As a family, we are truly heartbroken to announce that our precious boy, who fought so courageously over 8 weeks and 3 days, passed over at 9.39 pm last night.”

The message continued, “He was surrounded by love. I have been getting MSG’s from people this morning and wanted as his ma to manifest my son’s courage to share with you all.”

The family added, “As a family we will post in more length when we are able. Until then, please know that the love you gave to our Dean and all of us has meant so very much.”

He is survived by his 17-year-old daughter.

Dean Franklin’s Final Messages & Support From ‘The Voice UK’ Family

Franklin documented his final weeks with quiet honesty on Instagram after revealing last month that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer.

As he shared updates on his treatment, messages of love and encouragement poured in, including public support from Paloma Faith and ‘The Voice UK’ host Emma Willis.

One of his most moving posts was a tribute to his mother, Marie, shared alongside a photo of the two, overcome with emotion.

In the caption, Franklin laid bare the depth of their bond and the strength he drew from her during his illness.

“To my darling mother… I couldn’t have made it through the last four weeks without you,” he wrote.
“Thank you for holding my hand, calming my fears, and loving me through the hardest days. I love you.”

Fundraiser Focused on His Daughter’s Future

Last month, Franklin launched a GoFundMe campaign to build financial stability for his family, with a particular focus on protecting his daughter’s future.

The fundraiser has now raised £31,084 toward its £35,000 goal, with support pouring in from more than 1,200 donations, reflecting the outpouring of love for Franklin and his family.

In the fundraiser description, Franklin introduced himself with quiet candor. “Hi, my name is Dean Franklin. I am a musician, a dad, and I have recently been diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer.”

He explained his decision to begin treatment, writing, “I am about to begin chemotherapy. While this treatment is not curative, it gives me time and the possibility of further options, and I have chosen to go ahead with it.”

Franklin said his focus had narrowed to what mattered most. “Right now, my focus is on treatment, managing pain, and holding on to the parts of life that matter most to me, especially music and my family,” he wrote.

Addressing the financial strain of his illness, Franklin added, “Because I am unable to work and because treatment will be ongoing, I am facing significant financial pressure.”

He also explained how the funds would be used, writing, “The funds raised will help with:

  • Day-to-day living costs during treatment
  • Reducing financial stress on my family
  • Planning ahead, including future costs and support for my daughter, who means everything to me.”

“This is not about giving up,” Franklin said. “It is about giving me peace of mind. Knowing that my daughter will be supported, and that practical worries will not take away from the time I have now.”

A Final Performance in London

Before starting treatment, Franklin honored one last personal promise to himself and his supporters. The street performer took to London’s Piccadilly Circus for a deeply emotional final busking performance, turning the moment into a farewell filled with music and gratitude.

“Before treatment begins, I am planning one final busking performance in London,” he wrote at the time. “It will be a moment of connection, gratitude, and love for the music and the people who have carried me through my life.”

Franklin also thanked those who had stood by him throughout his journey. “Thank you for reading, for sharing, and for supporting in whatever way you can. It truly means more than I can say,” he wrote.

He added, “If there comes a time when I am unable to update this page myself, my family may share updates on my behalf.”

As messages of remembrance continue to surface, Franklin is being honored not just for his talent, but for the honesty, strength, and love he showed for his family in his final weeks.
