Reba McEntire opened up about how she and her family have been doing since the tragic death of her former stepson, Brandon Blackstock. “The Voice” coach shared how the loss is felt every single day.
Reba McEntire & Family Cope With Loss of Her Former Stepson
During a September 14 interview with “Entertainment Tonight” at the 2025 Emmy Awards, McEntire was asked about Blackstock, who died on August 7 after a three-year battle with cancer.
“So Reba, of course we have been keeping you in our thoughts, and your family, the last few weeks I know have been difficult for you guys,” the interviewer said. “How are you holding up with the passing of Brandon?”
“Well, we miss him. We miss him every minute,” McEntire responded.
She continued, “The kids are doing well. They’re all bonding together and hanging out with each other, and taking it one day at a time.”
McEntire added, “We know God’s got this.”
Blackstock had two children, Savannah and Seth, with his ex-wife Melissa Ashworth, and two children, River Rose and Remy, with ex-wife Kelly Clarkson.

Blackstock passed away on August 7, 2025, at age 48.
A spokesperson for the family shared the news in a statement that read: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
McEntire, who was previously married to Blackstock’s father Narvel Blackstock from 1989 to 2015, shared a tribute to her former stepson.
On August 12, “The Voice” coach posted a series of photos of her and Blackstock. “Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God. His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence,” she wrote.
McEntire continued, “There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family.”
She added, “Rest in peace cowboy. Happy trails to you til we meet again.”
The obituary shared by Axelson Funeral & Cremation Services shared in part, “He was honest and earnest. He was loyal, hardworking, and loved hard. But never did his star shine brighter than in his role as a father.”
The tribute added, “Nothing mattered to Brandon more than his four beautiful children, Savannah, Seth, River, and Remy. To say he was devoted seems cliché. It feels like an overused word, but it is the correct word. He was a devoted father. His four children were and will always be his greatest love and his greatest legacy.”
