‘The Voice’ Season 30 LIVE Recap & Spoilers: Who is Eliminated in ‘The Battles Premiere’ Tonight?

Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green, Queen Latifah
NBC

Well, the Blind Auditions are over, and now it’s time to see which Artists can hold their own in the Battles! “The Voice” Season 30 returns tonight with “The Battles Premiere.” The hard part? only one Artist from each Battle can be chosen to advance by their Coach, which means someone will be heading home.

Yep, the competition is about to get a whole lot tougher. These Artists have already impressed the Coaches enough to earn a spot on their teams, but now they have to prove they deserve to stay. Let’s be real, having to compete against someone on your own team isn’t exactly an easy situation!

And with the option to “steal” an Artist for their team, an elimination doesn’t always have to be the end of the road. Honestly, it seems like Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah, and Riley Green could have some pretty difficult decisions ahead as they weigh each performance and decide who deserves another shot. Will any Artists get stolen, and who will be sent home? We’re about to find out.

Yep, it’s time to see out who makes it through and who has to say goodbye!

Only One Artist Can Win Each Battle on ‘The Voice’

The Blind Auditions were all about earning a spot on a team, but now the Artists have to show their Coaches why they deserve to stick around.

This season, the celebrity advisors are Ariana DeBose for Team Kelly, Patti Labelle for Team Queen, Carly Pearce for Team Riley, and Alex Warren for Team Adam.

So, how do the Battles actually work?

  • two singers from the same team take the stage together and perform the same song after their Coach and celebrity advisor help them get ready.
  • the Coach has to pick a winner. Yep, even if both Artists do a great job, only one can move on.

But let’s be real, losing a Battle doesn’t always mean going home.

  • each Coach gets one steal where they can choose to bring an Artist who lost their Battle onto their team.
  • if nobody uses a steal, the losing Artist of each Battle is eliminated.

Honestly, it seems like the Coaches will have some tough calls to make, and one steal could give a singer another shot at winning “The Voice” Season 30.

Recap: Team Riley Artists Take on the First Battle

At the end of last week’s Blind Auditions episode, fans got their first glimpse at this season’s Battles. They kicked things off with a Battle featuring Brandy Neely up against the only duo in the competition, Ferryn & Brinkley.

They sang “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert.

Clarkson admitted that Brandy would be tough to go against, telling her, “Man, Brandy, it’s hard to compete…but you shine through!” Then, when it came time to give Riley Green her take on the Battle, Kelly said, “I would lean a little towards Ferryn & Brinkley.”

  • Winner: Ferryn & Brinkley
  • Eliminated: Brandy Neely

Battle #1: Team Queen

Alt Bloom faced off against Morgan Lett, singing “Ex-Factor” by Lauryn Hill.

  • Riley Green called it “fun” and pointed out how much he liked Alt’s high notes. Green admitted he would lean toward Morgan because of his “energetic” performance.
  • Kelly Clarkson, meanwhile, felt Morgan did the song justice but compared Alt to Adam Levine and leaned toward Alt because he managed to surprise her.
  • Adam Levine thought the decision would ultimately come down to personal taste.

Queen Latifah chose… Alt Bloom as the winner of this Battle.

  • Eliminated: Morgan Lett

Battle #2: Team Adam

Cal Cook faced off against Connor Closs, singing “Homewrecker” by Sombr.

  • Queen Latifah called the performance “fun to watch” and felt Cal was fully committed from the beginning.
  • Riley Green said, “I’d come see that show.” He praised Connor’s warm tone and Cal’s ability to bring movement into his vocals, calling the Battle a toss-up.
  • Kelly Clarkson loved the energy both Artists brought to the stage. She highlighted Cal’s chest voice and described Connor’s runs as “ear candy.” In the end, she leaned more toward Connor.

Adam Levine chose… Connor Closs as the winner of this Battle.

  • Eliminated: Cal Cook

Battle #3: Team Riley

Joe Henley faced off against Kenna Elpers, singing “Don’t Mind If I Do” by Riley Green & Ella Langley.

  • Adam Levine poked fun at Riley’s song choice before sharing his thoughts on the performance. While he felt both Artists did well, he ultimately preferred Joe’s voice.
  • Queen Latifah also thought both singers did a good job, but she made sure to point out how powerful Joe’s voice was.
  • Kelly Clarkson got excited as the performance began, shouting out a “H*** yeah!” She then noted, “Boy you could not be more different.” Kelly also praised the depth of Joe’s voice, comparing it to what she called “the Randy Travis effect.”

Riley Green chose… Joe Henley as the winner of this Battle.

  • Eliminated: Kenna Elpers

Battle #4: Team Kelly

Koumba Diallo faced off against Lance Tenazas, singing “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish.

  • Queen Latifah admitted, “I closed my eyes for a minute to just enjoy it.” She called Koumba’s voice “insane” and felt the song gave her more room to show off her vocal skills.
  • Adam Levine had to double-check that Koumba was actually 15 because he was so impressed with her performance. Still, he thought Lance held his own against her.
  • Riley Green pointed out that Lance stood out even while performing against “one of the best singers on the show.” He also complimented Koumba’s cowboy boots, which she joked she wore just for him. Yep, it seems she knew how to get Riley’s attention!

Kelly Clarkson chose… Koumba Diallo as the winner of this Battle.

  • Eliminated: Lance Tenazas

Battle #5: Team Riley

Caroline Alexis faced off against Everett Bounds, singing “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” by Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn.

But here’s a fun surprise: the two Artists revealed they’re actually dating after meeting during the audition process! Yep, talk about an unexpected twist for the Battles.

  • Adam Levine admitted he was “a stranger in a strange land” when it came to this style of music. Still, he leaned toward Everett because he felt Everett did better than he had during the Blind Auditions.
  • Kelly Clarkson called the performance “so fun” and described it as a “throwback.” She praised Everett for showing off his range during the bigger moments, but felt the Battle was evenly matched.
  • Queen Latifah thought the performance clearly told the story of someone trying to cross the Mississippi River to be with the person they love. Honestly, it seems like these two brought the song’s story to life!

Riley Green chose… Everett Bounds as the winner of this Battle.

  • Eliminated: Caroline Alexis

Battle #6: Team Queen

Kayleigh Mathews faced off against Lillie Kolich, singing “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town.

  • Riley Green asked about their choreography, saying he “loved that you came out mean mugging each other.” He joked that by the end of the performance, he had almost “fell in love” with them.
  • Adam Levine leaned toward Kayleigh but felt Lillie gave herself a chance to shine by doing something unexpected. He praised Lillie for rising to the challenge and admitted he was “pumped he didn’t have to choose between them.”
  • Kelly Clarkson shouted “Nice!” when the Artists harmonized and called the performance her “favorite.” She praised Kayleigh’s range and pointed out that Lillie’s choice on the word “maybe” changed everything.

Queen Latifah chose… Lillie Kolich as the winner of this Battle.

  • Eliminated: None — Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green both hit their steal buttons to try to bring Kayleigh onto their teams.

Of course, we’re ending on a cliffhanger! Both Coaches want Kayleigh, but we’ll have to wait to find out which team she chooses. Honestly, it seems like Kayleigh has a tough decision ahead of her, and let’s be real, she’s got some great options!

Tune in “The Voice” to tomorrow night at 8:00pm ET on NBC for Night 2 of the Battles to see which team Kayleigh Mathews chooses.
