As the Paramount+ “Clueless” revival series firms up, a new report indicates that the nostalgia will be running strong.
According to Deadline, producers are planning to round up as many stars from the original film that they can to appear in the upcoming reboot.
An ‘Event Series’
When Alicia Silvertone returns as an older and presumably wiser Cher Horowitz in this 30-years-later sequel project, she’ll be surrounded with an array of familiar faces from the beloved 1995 film.
“We decided to make it an event series because it deserves to be an event,” Paramount+ head of originals Jane Wiseman told Deadline.
“We feel like this is going to be something that people are going to come to in droves — already you can tell — if you want to get the cast back together, if you want to see where everyone is,” Wiseman explained.
OG ‘Clueless’ Cast
The “Clueless” revival series had initially been set for Peacock — until the streamer took a pass, and the project landed at Paramount+.
Sources tell Deadline that the series was picked up based solely on the strength of the pilot script.
“While the rest of the episodes have not been written yet, I hear the plan is to bring as many of the film’s stars — which include Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Wallace Shawn, Jeremy Sisto and Breckin Meyer — back. (Fellow cast member Brittany Murphy died in 2009.),” Deadline reported.
While Wiseman confirmed that only Silverstone is officially attached to the project at this point, the notion of bringing back multiple members of the OG cast certainly appeals to her.
“Oh, we would love it,” Wiseman exclaimed.
An ‘Open-Ended’ Revival
The series comes from Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, Jordan Weiss and CBS Studios, and will pick up 30 years after the events of the film.
“Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood — that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again,” reads the synopsis for the upcoming series, which is set to head into production next year.
“It’s a mother-daughter story, which I don’t want to overlook because we’re really excited about the next generation of ‘Clueless,’” Wiseman said. “Sitting across the table from Alicia Silverstone and hearing her talk about the character, it just makes so much sense. We really wanted to get the band back together and celebrate it in an event series, and that really is what hit home for us.”
At the moment, the plan is for “Clueless” to be a limited series with a finite run. That said, Wiseman admitted she’s open to expanding to a second season if the show proves to be as popular as is hoped.
“If I can leave it open-ended, I’d like to,” she said. “But the idea is that this particular version of the show is supposed to be an event. It’s supposed to be open and closed where Cher is in her life and what she and her daughter are up to, and how we can bring the cast back to celebrate it.”
