‘Clueless’ TV Sequel Stalls at Peacock, But Project Is Still Alive

It seems like we’re going to have to wait a little longer before heading back to Beverly Hills with Cher Horowitz. The planned TV sequel to the beloved 1995 film “Clueless” has officially hit a snag at Peacock… but before anyone starts mourning those plaid sets, this story isn’t over.

According to Variety, the project is no longer moving forward at the streamer. However, the key takeaway? It’s not canceled. Not even close. The studios behind the series are still very much invested in bringing it to life.

So yeah, it’s a setback; but not a goodbye.

‘Clueless’: A Reboot With Strong Backing

Let’s rewind for a second. The original “Clueless,” starring Alicia Silverstone as the iconic Cher Horowitz, wasn’t just a teen comedy… it became a full-on cultural moment. Loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s novel “Emma,” the film delivered quotable lines, unforgettable fashion, and a cast that still has fans in a chokehold decades later.

So when news broke in April 2025 that a sequel series was in development (with Silverstone set to reprise her role) it felt like the kind of reboot that actually made sense.

Now, while Peacock is stepping away, the studios behind the project aren’t giving up. Not even a little.

“CBS Studios and Paramount remain high on the project and the IP. Given the rabid fanbase for the film and the auspices it boasts, it is expected to generate significant interest in the marketplace when it is taken out to buyers once again.”

Translation? This show still has a very real shot. And honestly, with the kind of nostalgia pull “Clueless” has, it seems like someone’s going to pick it up.

This Isn’t the First ‘Clueless’ TV Adaptation

If this whole situation feels a little déjà vu, that’s because “Clueless” has been down the TV road before.

Back in 1996, an adaptation hit ABC for its first season before moving over to UPN, where it ran until 1999. Rachel Blanchard stepped into Cher’s designer shoes for the series, giving fans a different (but still fun) take on the character.

And then there was the 2020 attempt at a Dionne-focused spin-off (yes, we were robbed), which was also in development at Peacock. That version never quite made it out of the planning stages, proving that even the most iconic IPs sometimes take a few tries to find the right home.

Why Fans Should Still Have Hope

Let’s be real; nostalgia is powerful, but “Clueless” isn’t just riding on old memories. The story, the characters, the humor? They still hit.

Bringing back Silverstone as Cher feels like the kind of full-circle moment fans actually want, not just another reboot for the sake of it. And it seems like the people behind the scenes understand that.

Between the continued support from CBS Studios and Paramount, and the “significant interest” expected once the project is shopped around again, there’s a strong chance we haven’t seen the last of this series.

It might take a little longer. It might land somewhere unexpected. But if there’s one thing we know, just like the 90s that Cher Horowitz has never been one to stay off the radar for long.

So for now? Consider this a pause; not a cancellation. And honestly… we’ll be waiting.
