Stars Rally Around Sarah Michelle Gellar After She Shares ‘Really Sad’ News

It has been nearly three decades since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” first debuted on television and went on to become one of the most influential cult classics of its generation. In recent years, fans have eagerly hoped for the story to return to the screen in a reboot.

But the long-awaited revival has taken an unexpected turn. The planned return to Sunnydale will not be happening after all. Here is the latest update Buffy Summers, AKA Sarah Michelle Gellar, shared with fans herself.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Breaks the News That Hulu Won’t Move Forward With ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’

Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot has been canceled, more than two decades after the beloved series ended its original run. The actress shared the news directly with fans in a video posted on Instagram.

“So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” the actress, 48, said.

“Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale,” she continued, referencing the streaming service backing the project and the reboot’s working title.

Despite the disappointment, Gellar reflected on how meaningful the experience had already been and thanked director Chloé Zhao, who had been set to lead the series.

“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”

She ended her message with a playful nod to longtime fans of the series.

“And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.”

The line is a reference to a fan-favorite quote from her character, Buffy Summers. Gellar also used the same phrase as the caption for her video.

Several celebrities and fans shared messages of disappointment and support in response to Gellar’s announcement.

Reality star Snooki wrote, “I hate 2026 😢.”

Singer and actor Nathaniel Bacon added, “This is the most disappointing entertainment news of the year. We love you and will follow you anywhere.”

Comic creator Rob Liefeld also praised Gellar, writing, “Class act! Always. Buffy & Sarah Forever!”

Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase in the supernatural drama “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” from 1997 to 1999 and later reprised the role in its spinoff “Angel” from 1999 to 2004, wrote, “😭 We needed our Slayer back!”

Award-Winning star Carly Roland wrote: “I have zero words. We needed this show…so messed up.”

The Legacy of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and grew into one of television’s most beloved supernatural dramas. The series helped shape an entire generation of genre storytelling and built a loyal fan base that still celebrates the show today.

Its success also led to the spinoff “Angel,” which aired from 1999 to 2004 and expanded the world first introduced in Sunnydale.

The original cast featured Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, James Marsters, Eliza Dushku, and Seth Green.

Actress Michelle Trachtenberg, who joined the series in later seasons, died in 2025 at the age of 39.

The planned revival would have introduced a new slayer, with Gellar returning in a recurring role while also serving as an executive producer.

Variety reported in February 2025 that Zhao was attached to direct and executive-produce the project. Nora and Lila Zuckerman were set to write and run the series.

Dolly Parton, whose company Sandollar Entertainment helped produce the original show, was also involved as an executive producer. In a 2025 interview, Gellar spoke warmly about the opportunity to collaborate with Zhao and the project’s team.

“There was no world where I thought Chloé Zhao was going to call me and partner with me, and ask my advice on things and my opinion — especially because she hasn’t done television,” Gellar said at the time.

“She’ll call me, and she’ll say, ‘Well, I have to defer to you,’ and I’m like, ‘Wait, what?’ Those aren’t words I ever thought I would hear.”

Although the reboot will not move forward, the legacy of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” continues to resonate.

Fans can still revisit the series, which remains available to stream on Hulu.
