Carrie Underwood Boldly Stands Up for Herself During Intense ‘American Idol’ Moment

For Carrie Underwood, being right is more important than being liked! While Underwood is no stranger to criticism, she again proved Monday night that she can face it head-on. During the latest episode of “American Idol,” the country star stayed composed when the studio audience reacted strongly to her feedback.

AMERICAN IDOL – “902 (Auditions)” – The competition heats up as auditions continue, with hopefuls stepping into the spotlight and delivering unforgettable performances. MONDAY, FEB. 2 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EST) on ABC.

The moment unfolded in Nashville during the second “Hollywood Week: Music City Takeover” episode.

After contestant Mor performed an original song, Underwood shared measured but direct criticism. Anticipating the crowd’s reaction, she addressed it before finishing her thoughts.

“You guys are gonna boo me. You’re gonna boo me,” she told the audience. “It’s coming. Bring it on. I love it! Your boos are feeding me.”

The reaction came just seconds later. Boos echoed through the studio, but Underwood stayed composed. She did not backtrack or raise her voice. Instead, she held her ground and kept her feedback centered on growth and opportunity.

As the episode aired, Underwood addressed the moment again on X.

“Boo me. I don’t care,” the country singer wrote.

Her critique centered on Mor’s decision to perform an original song. “In a room like this, for you to bring an original song with that incredible band sitting behind you, twiddling their thumbs, I feel like it was a missed opportunity,” she said.

The exchange clearly struck a nerve with the live audience, yet Underwood remained steady, standing by her assessment without apology.

Luke Bryan Steps In as Judges Trade Banter

Fellow judge Luke Bryan stepped in as the audience reaction continued.

“She only won this. She knows,” Bryan, 49, said, pointing to Underwood’s Season 4 victory.

Underwood then addressed the crowd directly. “You’re not included in the discussions,” she said, drawing a clear line between the panel’s role and the audience’s reaction.

The mood soon lightened as the judges shifted into playful banter.

“Why don’t they boo you?” she asked Bryan.

“I don’t know, I’m trying to get booed,” he replied.

Underwood turned back to the audience with a grin. “You’re not going to boo him?,” she asked. This time, the crowd obliged, easing the tension with a round of good-natured boos.

Underwood Has Addressed Criticism Before

The moment was not entirely unexpected. Underwood has previously acknowledged that her judging style does not always land smoothly with live audiences.

“Spoiler alert…I get booed A LOT from our Hollywood Week audience @AmericanIdol,” she tweeted on February 16.

During an earlier appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Highway,” she addressed the criticism more directly.

“Sometimes I get in trouble from people like, ‘How dare she say that it wasn’t perfect?’” she said. “And I’m like, I just want everybody to learn, and that’s part of it. And nobody wants to just hear that they’re amazing all the time.”

“We just want everybody to be able to grow and get better,” Underwood went on, “and be the most awesome version of themselves that they could be.”

Underwood joined “American Idol” as a judge for Season 23, stepping into the role previously held by Katy Perry when the season premiered in March 2025.

For Underwood, pushback seems to come with the job. Still, she has made it clear that she will continue offering honest feedback, even when it is not the most popular opinion in the room.
