Carrie Underwood may shine under bright lights onstage and television, but at home, the country superstar says life looks completely different.
The “American Idol” winner and current judge recently opened up about her quieter side, revealing that fans would probably be surprised by who she is away from the spotlight.
Underwood Dishes on How Different Farm Life Is
Speaking with Us Weekly, Underwood, 43, shared details about everyday life at the sprawling 400-acre Tennessee farm she shares with husband Mike Fisher, 45, and their two sons, Isaiah, 11, and Jacob, 7.
“When I’m away [for work], I’m like Cinderella at the ball,” Underwood said. “I’m a princess, and it’s great.”
But once she returns home to Franklin, Tennessee, glamour quickly takes a backseat.
“And then I come home, and I’m covered in dirt [and] poop,” she continued. “It’s just the polar opposite.”
The Grammy-winning singer added that her days are often spent handling everyday responsibilities around the farm.
“I’m cleaning up after everybody and barefoot in the kitchen,” she said, before adding, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Underwood and Fisher moved away from Hollywood in 2019, trading the entertainment world for a quieter lifestyle rooted in nature and family.
All About Underwood’s Farm
Their farm includes horses, chickens, a barn and a garden where Underwood grows vegetables like carrots and beets.
While her career continues to thrive — including her return to “American Idol” as a judge for Season 23 in March 2025 and the conclusion of her nearly four-year Las Vegas residency in April — those closest to her say home is where she feels most fulfilled.
“Carrie loves life on the farm — growing vegetables, caring for animals and teaching her kids to do the same,” an insider told Us Weekly. “She loves her career and creating and performing, but as she has said, that’s not her real life. Her real life is at home with her family.”
Underwood has spoken openly for years about reconnecting with her roots and how meaningful country living has become to her.
In a recent interview with Parade, the singer reflected on why returning to a farm lifestyle felt so natural.
“You can try to take the farm girl off the farm, but she’s going to find her way back,” Underwood said. “Which is exactly what I did.”
She explained that everyday tasks — from gardening to cooking meals for her family — have become a meaningful source of balance.
“There’s just something really beautiful about being outside, about planting things, about making … meals for my family,” she said.
Farm life has even become part of her wellness routine and inspired her lifestyle brand, HiNote.
“It’s a cup-filler for me,” Underwood explained. “It feels like that’s what I’m supposed to be doing.”
Underwood Feels at Home at the Farm
The singer has also admitted that Hollywood never quite felt like home.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s Front Row in March, Underwood reflected on quickly learning that the entertainment industry didn’t align with her real life.
“I learned very quickly that this is not real life,” she said of show business. “I love performing… but the world that that takes you to is just not real.”
Her husband, Fisher, is also reportedly thrilled to have her home in Tennessee after busy stretches of work.
“As supportive as he is of her career, he’s a guy who wants normalcy,” an insider shared with Us Weekly. “They are a very traditional couple living a not-so-traditional life.”
Underwood occasionally gives fans glimpses of that life on social media — most recently sharing sweet moments after adding sheep to the family farm, including a video of herself bottle-feeding one of the animals.
