Former “American Idol” star Jordin Sparks has enjoyed an incredible career since winning the singing competition in 2007. She has proven herself as a skilled performer, wowing with her impressive vocals, but does this talent run in the family?
Sparks has opened up about her son, Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr., and whether he is interested in following in her footsteps.
Jordin Sparks Discusses Her Son’s Talent
Sparks is a mother to Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr., whom she shares with her husband Dana Isaiah. Their son was born in May 2018 and is already showing musical talent of his own. This is something Sparks discussed with People at the Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion event on Thursday, September 18 (the interview was published on September 21).
“It’s kind of cosmic when I’m sitting next to him, and I’ll start singing. Then he joins in,” Sparks told People. “I’m just like, ‘I can’t believe that this happened. You’re able to do this like I’m able to do it.’”
If Thomas Jr. does decide to follow in his mom’s footsteps, he will be doing it with support. “So now my husband is like, ‘You need to start giving him voice lessons, babe,’” Sparks said. “I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I guess I could do that.’ So yeah, we sing all the time.”
Helping Thomas Jr. hone his skills has also been a fun way for mother and son to bond because Sparks revealed they sing duets together. “Oh, man. When “Wicked” came out, please. We were singing that high note all over the house,” she said.
Jordin Sparks Would Love To Sing With Her Son
The sweet thing is that Sparks may support her son’s musical talent, but she has no intention of pushing him in any direction. If he wants to follow in her footsteps and pursue a career in the music industry, that is for him to decide. Speaking of sharing their music with the public, she told People she would “love to do that” but has no intention of forcing him. “If he comes up to me one day and is like, ‘Mom, I want to be a singer like you,’ then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” she said.
She continued, “Right now, he’s kind of exploring everything that he likes, but I’m not going to force him to do what I’m doing because it’s a lot to do this, but if he wanted to do, I would be right there for him.”
Sparks’ comments about her son give fans a glimpse into her motherhood journey. She also occassionaly shares photos of their time together on Instagram, and her little boy is growing up so fast!
