Country musician and “American Idol” season 23 runner-up John Foster observed a moment of remembrance for one of his own idols, Toby Keith. Foster shared an Instagram post on September 19 in which he is shown visiting Keith’s grave alongside his band.
Foster was in Norman, Oklahoma to perform at an event for the Toby Keith Foundation, a charity that helps families of children battling cancer.
“It’s an absolute honor to take the stage tonight in Norman, OK for Toby Keith’s amazing foundation,” Foster captioned his post. “We were also honored to spend a quiet moment at the legend’s resting place—a reminder of the incredible legacy he left behind.”
The 19-year-old country crooner is featured standing with his signature cowboy hat in his hands, paying his respects to Keith. Keith passed away from cancer in February of 2024 at the age of 62.
John Foster Honored Toby Keith While Competing on ‘Idol’
Although Foster ultimately came in second place on “American Idol,” he finished out the competition as strong as ever with a rousing rendition of Toby Keith’s hit patriotic song “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue.”
The performance earned him a standing ovation from both the audience and the judges, including Carrie Underwood was who shown singing along to the last lines of the song.
“Man, what a true blessing to share this Idol stage with so many incredible heroes, both new faces and legends,” Foster captioned an Instagram post celebrating his time on the show. “I’m beyond thankful, and I can’t wait to keep making music for y’all as long as the good Lord lets me.”
What’s Next for Foster?
Since his impressive run on “American Idol,” Foster has been establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the country music world. The singer has already performed at the Grand Ole Opry three times, reuniting with Carrie Underwood during his most recent trip to country music’s biggest stage.
Foster also recently announced that he will be representing his home state of Louisiana at the 2026 Rose Parade, explaining that the news was “some of the most exciting of my career.”
And on September 4, the musician shared a photo of himself on Instagram in what appears to be a recording studio with the caption, “Can y’all guess what I’m up to? Here’s a hint—it involves country music!”
Fans of Foster were enthusiastic in the comments, eager for some new music from the talented performer. One fan wrote, “HOPE IT IS SHARING THAT AMAZING GIFT YOU HAVE!!!” And many others echoed the sentiment.
