It seems like second chances are having a moment on ”American Idol.” Monday night’s audition episode brings back a familiar face: Season 19 standout Mary Jo Young, says a TVInsider exclusive. And she’s not walking into that room as the same hopeful viewers first met in 2021.
Back then, Young made a strong impression, earning three ”yeses” from that year’s judges: Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry. She powered through Hollywood Week (even after a nerve-wracking moment forgetting lyrics in the middle of her partner song) and ultimately landed in the Top 24. Not too shabby for a first run.
But now? She’s back… and it sounds like she means business.
A Familiar Face Walks Back In
In a preview clip released via Youtube, Richie immediately clocks Young the second she enters the audition room, telling her, “We know you!” Yep, you read that right. Not many contestants get that kind of instant recognition years later.
Young reflected candidly on her earlier exit from the show, saying, “When it came to an end, it was a good kicking the baby bird out of its nest because I needed to go and grow.” It’s the kind of self-aware moment fans love to see. Growth arc? Check.
Since her original run, Young hasn’t been sitting around waiting for lightning to strike again. She’s been out there putting in the work, building real-world experience that many returning contestants only talk about.
DisneyConfidence (and Experience) Changes Things
Young shared just how much life has changed since her Season 19 days:
“I feel like a new person. I’ve been touring. I opened for Alex Warren, JVKE, Jessie Murph. I feel like my confidence has definitely grown, too.”
Let’s be real; touring experience is no small thing. Opening for rising artists like Alex Warren, JVKE, and Jessie Murph gives Young the kind of stage polish that can seriously shift her “Idol” trajectory.
For her Season 24 audition (yes, the show’s timeline keeps moving), Young performs an original song titled “Don’t Call Me.” Bringing original material into the Idol room is always a bold move… but it also signals confidence. And based on what we’re hearing, she’s leaning all the way in. And judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood seem to be smiling.
Richie, ever the mentor, even offered some grounded advice that honestly applies far beyond reality TV:
“You’re going to get knocked down and you might get knocked out. Don’t take it personal. Just come back in the ring. That’s what it’s all about.”
Consider the pep talk officially delivered.
Why Mary Jo Young Came Back
Young didn’t mince words about her motivation either. She explained:
“I wanted to come back to American Idol because I learned the most from being on the show than I have on any tour.”
That’s a pretty powerful endorsement of the “Idol” experience; and it suggests she’s returning with intention, not just nostalgia.
Whether this comeback run turns into a full redemption arc remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: Mary Jo Young is walking into that audition room with more confidence, more experience, and something to prove.
Fans can watch it all unfold tonight, February 16, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC (streaming next day on Hulu) during “Auditions, Part 4,” and see if Young punches her ticket to Hollywood Week in Nashville once again.
And honestly? It seems like this round might hit very differently.
