Singer Flooded With Support After Tearful ‘American Idol’ Performance: ‘My Heart Broke’

Sheldon Riley of Melbourne, Australia, delivered a heartbreaking speech and performance during the new Ohana round of “American Idol” on March 9, 2026. But after crumpling into tears as he sang, judges  Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie opted not to send him through to the Top 20 — a move that shocked and saddened many of his fans and friends from the show.

Carrie Underwood Told Sheldon Riley He is ‘Enough’ After His Emotional Performance

During the show’s first-ever Ohana round, contestants’ family members were part of the audience as the singers each performed and spoke about the importance of their families’ support.

Before Riley sang his selection, he got choked up as he told the crowd, “Unfortunately, I don’t have family with me here today. I actually haven’t had family with me in a long time on this music journey of mine. Sorry, sorry. Sometimes in life, when you are not handed the right cards and not put in the right family with the right people, you have to build your own family and your own home. And that’s me. I’m really grateful to be here. Thank you for having me, and thank you for being my little family here with me.”

Riley then performed “To Build a Home” by The Cinematic Orchestra feat. Patrick Watson. Though he had moments when his vocals soared and wowed the crowd, Riley crumpled into tears multiple times and did not advance to the next round.

Before the verdict, Underwood told him, “You have so much talent and range and power and range in your vocals. I feel like your brain just gets in the way. I feel like you’re building up some walls in front of us, every time you sing. But you don’t need to do that, because you’re enough.”

Fans & ‘American Idol’ Peers Were Shocked by Sheldon Riley’s Elimination

Although Riley couldn’t keep his composure during his Ohana performance, many fans and friends were upset that the judges didn’t advance him into the Top 20, flooding social media with reactions, including someone who wrote, “My heart broke for you tonight. I love everything you do. And you are absolutely wonderful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂”

Another commented, “This was so powerful and your emotion made it better. I’m heartbroken for you and was yelling at my tv. Please never stop sharing your talent with the world. ❤️”

Among the plethora of reactions on YouTube, one fan wrote, “Beyond disappointing. I was waiting all week to hear him sing and he easily could have made it to the next level. They should have at least let him go head to head with someone and re-earn his status. Smh” ️

Riley also received sweet support from some of his “American Idol” peers, including form Chris Tungseth, who did make the Top 20. He wrote on Riley’s post, “YOU ARE MY FAMILY @sheldonriley” and later added, “love you forever ♡”

Chloe Lauren, who was also eliminated during the Ohana round, wrote, “My god, I love you dearly!! You have my HEART, Sheldon!!”

Sheldon Riley Told ‘American Idol’ Judges He ‘Hated’ Himself While Competing on Other Shows

Riley is no stranger to vocal competitions, after competing on shows like “The X Factor Australia,” “The Voice Australia” (placing third in 2018), and “The Masked Singer Australia.” In 2020, he competed on season 15 of “America’s Got Talent” and the show brought him back in 2024 for “America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League,” on Mel B’s team, and made it to the semi-finals. In 2022, he represented his nation during the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.

During Riley’s “American Idol” audition, he told the judges that those competitions messed with his sense of identity, especially early on when negative feedback on his first reality show made him feel like he was “not enough.”

“That experience made me doubt myself,” he said in a pre-produced segment. “It made me feel I had to play a character just to be seen. I kind of created this character that dressed up — crazy, the most avant garde, high fashion, crystals and diamonds — and it was the thing that made people see me. And it just kind of took off. I had opportunities like crazy.”

“I’ve been on every competition show known to man,” Riley told the judges, “and the offers just kept getting crazier and crazier. It almost felt like an addiction to be the most memorable person in the room. But I’d come home, I’d take the mask off, the makeup, accessories, everything. And I would hate the person I saw in the mirror. Hated that version of me.”

Riley said he took two years off to remember who he was, and decided to do “American Idol” because “there’s no smoke, there’s no mirrors, no nothing, and I said to myself if I was going to come back into music, it would be here with just the piano and just me, and if you don’t like it, you don’t like it.”

  1. I feel for all of those who were cut last night, however, to latch on to Riley in particular, based on his background story, is a stretch. All of those cut were hugely talented and they all have a story. To say that sometimes you are given to the wrong family could also fit many people. Now I’m gonna get on my soap box…God doesn’t make mistakes, so, if he is talking about being born into the wrong family, I’m sorry he feels that way. But, if a family doesn’t agree with choices, that doesn’t mean it is the wrong family. If he is speaking of some other way to wind up in the wrong family, then, that also comes down to choices. I don’t feel any more compassion for him than any of the others.

    • You’re right, God doesn’t make mistakes, but people do. It was never mentioned while he was on this show, but Sheldon is gay. His “family” never accepted his sexuality and basically rejected him completely. You are also right in that other contestants have their own story and problems or issues that have impacted their lives significantly, but that doesn’t diminish Sheldon’s story. I’ve followed his journey on the other shows before he ever came to American Idol. He’s super talented, but he needs to work on his self confidence probably with a therapist because he just seems broken at this stage of his life. He has to believe in himself before he can perform at the level he’s capable of doing. I hope he finds peace with his inner demons and reaches his full potential.

  2. It was sad to see him not a part of the top 20, some of them should have been gone. I think if someone could work with him he could go far. God bless you.
