Former “Below Deck” chief steward Kate Chastain recently shared a lesser-known element of her professional training: she is a trained firefighter.
She made the revelation while speaking with Us Weekly on Wednesday, September 24.
Chastain explained that fire training isn’t optional in yachting — it’s part of the job.
“You have to be,” she stated.
If a fire breaks out on board, it’s crew members like her who are have to handle the situation.
“If the boat catches on fire, we are the ones that are supposed to don the firesuits and fight it,” Chastain continued. “I mean, personally, I’m getting on the Jet Ski, and I’m getting out of there.”
Chastain Talks Difficult Guests
She also reflected on more typical, though challenging, aspects of her yacht life — namely dealing with difficult charter guests.
One particularly memorable group during Season 7 in Thailand included a man who wanted the crew to join him in the primary stateroom’s shower and shot dollar bills at them with a money gun. Chastain described him as “entitled and obnoxious.”
“The only guests that stand out as being a negative memory are the ones that were just entitled and impolite,” she added.
The 42-year-old was a fan favorite on the popular show and was on for six seasons. She announced she would be exiting the show in February 2020 with a social media post.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, I have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new land based role,” she wrote. “I intend to step back as a senior member of the Below Deck Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support His Majesty Andy Cohen.”
Chastain Is Redecorating Her Home Since Leaving ‘Below Deck’
Chastain has been busy turning her new Florida bungalow into a home that reflects her unique personality—and the updates she’s shared are already making waves.
In January, Chastain gushed about it being her “dream home.” She was excited as there were renovations already completed prior to her moving in, and she just so happened to love the choices!
“To have them already done that, it feels like I hired an interior designer before I even knew it,” she told the Daily Dish. “I love her style. She did the work and then I get to reap the benefits.”
While she clearly loves the aesthetic upgrades, Chastain admitted the home isn’t totally finished. She stated how she is looking forward to watching her son, Sullivan, grow up in the home.
