‘DWTS” and ‘Sex and the City’ Star Reveals Shocking Career Pivot After 3-Year Absence

Known for his work as hunky actor and Samantha’s love interest, Smith Jerrod on “Sex and the City,” star Jason Lewis all but walked away from Hollywood. Now, fans have a better idea of what he’s been up to over the past three years.

After appearing in the second “SATC” movie in 2010, Lewis later starred in the short-lived series “Midnight, Texas,” appeared in a handful of movies, competed on Season 31 of “Dancing with the Stars,” and then disappeared. The actor is one of the few stars who didn’t appear in the recent “SATC” follow-up series “And Just Like That,” though Kim Cattrall’s refusal to return full-time makes his absence understandable.

On May 21, he shared a video in which he admitted he “went quiet” for three years. He then teased an upcoming project, though he didn’t get into any details at the time. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, however, he gave some additional insight into his big career pivot.

Jason Lewis’ New Career Revealed

Speaking with THR, the 54-year-old revealed he moved from Hollywood to Costa Rica about three years ago. Since then, he’s not only been surfing away, but working on a “sprawling fantasy epic book series” set across “different eras in the same universe, all exploring themes of power, agency, tyranny and redemption.”

The plan for the series is nine books, with the seventh to be the first released.

“So I was in a space where I’ve been working on a fantasy book series. Three trilogies,” he explained. “Closer to ‘Lord of the Rings.’ It’s epic fantasy. It’s my own magic system based more in physics than the soft magic of casting spells and stuff like that.”

He said that as he sat down and put pen to paper, the idea “just kept expanding and growing into this bigger and bigger world.” At the same time, he shared he needed to focus and explained he “wanted a healthy lifestyle and access to good food” while writing. Per Lewis, he chose Costa Rica because living next to the beach provides “easy motivation for me to stay healthy,” adding he also wanted to learn Spanish.

His routine, he explained, includes waking up at 4 am, getting a workout in, and writing “anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 words” a day. So far, he added, he’s outlined the three trilogies.

“But I chose to start at the end. I’m on book seven. I’m on the fourth draft of it. Well, 3.5. The first draft is really just a 150-page summary,” he said of his work, admitting the rollout is similar to “Star Wars.”

Lewis added he doesn’t yet have a publisher.

Jason Lewis Returns to Social Media

His book reveal comes after Lewis returned to social media with an Instagram video on May 21 (posted above).

“Three years ago, I went quiet. Not because I had nothing to say, but because I had something to do,” he explained to his followers in the footage.

“The kind of creative work that doesn’t leave room for much else. I made my peace with that,” he continued. “It’s the kind of work that needs to find its people, though. I’m still in it, but I’m far enough along now that I felt it was time to resurface and share what I’ve been doing.”

Without giving more details, he only promised “more to come.”

“After three years, it was time,” he captioned the video.

Fans were thrilled to see his return, while a couple of celebrity friends also reacted to the video. Among them was his “Charmed” costar Rose McGowan, who commented, “👏✨” — while fellow Season 31 “DWTS” contestant Selma Blair adding, “Good to see you. 🩵”

According to his IMDB page, Lewis also has a project called “Restaveks” in the works.
