ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” has featured a wide range of talent over the years. In recent seasons, reality television stars have been featured more often.
The DWTS casting department loves choosing names that will entice viewers to tune in. Whether audiences love them or hate them, getting people to watch it the ultimate goal.
According to the pro dancers, “villains” are an important component of every reality television cast. However, Witney Carson thinks “Dancing With the Stars” is the perfect opportunity for villains to redeem themselves.
Witney Carson Loves That DWTS Allows Contestants to Tell Their Stories
Over the years, “Dancing With the Stars” has cast many controversial names. Most recently, Anna Delvey competed on season 33. Carole Baskin also competed on season 29.
Although viewers may not like the villain, the “Dancing With the Stars” pros admit they are necessary. However, they don’t necessarily have to stay villains.
“Every reality TV show needs a villain because there needs to be a story arc,” Ezra Sosa told Vulture in a new interview. “I’m sometimes more sat for the villain than I am the non-villains.”
But when asked who the villain was in DWTS season 34, the dancers couldn’t quite make up their minds.
“Goodness, I don’t think anyone,” Witney Carson admitted. “Whitney Leavitt was painted as a villain on [‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives‘] and then she came to our show and reinvented herself, which I think was amazing.”
Ezra admitted he’s a big fan of SLOMW and couldn’t get enough of Whitney.
“On season one of ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,’ I was obsessed with Whitney Leavitt, but now, guess what? Everyone is,” the 25-year-old quipped.
Although the dancers couldn’t pinpoint a villain among the celebrity contestants, Ezra Sosa admitted many audience members would point fingers at the judges.
“I was going to say the judges, but they’re just doing their job,” he told Vulture. “A lot of people think our judges are the villains because they give us low scores. Sis, they’re just doing their job. Rent is due.”
‘Dancing With the Stars’ Season 35 Casts Its First Contestants
It will be several months until the full cast list is out for “Dancing With the Stars” season 35. However, the network has piqued fans’ interest by releasing the names of two contestants.
Ciara Miller of “Summer House” and Maura Higgins from “Love Island” will compete for the Mirrorball trophy this fall.
Witney Carson is dreaming big for her next celebrity partner.
“If I had to pick a partner, my dream partner, I’ve just been saying lately, Tom Holland,” the 32-year-old told E! News. “If he’s bored, you know, come on over. He’s a little busy right now. I’ve seen some of his clips of him dancing. I’m like ‘Dude, you can dance!’ And he can flip! He’d be amazing, he’s so fun and cool.”
“Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro” hits ABC this summer on Monday, July 13. Fans can tune into DWTS season 35 this fall.
