Nicole Richie turned the Los Angeles premiere of “Stop! That! Train!” into a mother-daughter date night.
The 44-year-old reality TV alum-turned-designer was joined on the red carpet by 18-year-old daughter Kate Madden. The teen is Richie’s eldest child with husband Joel Madden, whom Nicole married in 2010. The two also share son Sparrow, 16.
The sighting was incredibly rare for Kate, who only recently started stepping into the spotlight with her own Instagram page and public appearances.
Nicole Richie’s Mini Me
The two made quite the pair at the “Stop! That! Train!” world premiere held at Harmony Gold on May 18 in L.A.
Richie appears in the comedy, which also stars RuPaul, a number of “Drag Race” alums, and names including Rachel Bloom, Matt Rogers, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michelle Visage, Chris Parnell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Charo, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Natasha Leggero, Drew Droege, Raven-Symoné, and Joel McHale.
While Richie sported her usual boho-chic aesthetic for the occasion, wearing a polka-dot dress and matching head scarf, her daughter rocked a more rock-goth ensemble.
Kate was seen with long, straight, jet black hair, a cross choker, and a leather mini. She paired the look with black knee-high boots while posing with her mom on the red carpet.
Nicole’s daughter also shared a close-up of her makeup on Instagram after the event, with her mom commenting “Gorg” on the post. Additional comments said she looked like her mom’s “twin.”
Kate Madden’s Recent Name Change
While Joel and Nicole’s daughter now goes by the name “Kate,” the pair named her “Harlow” at birth. Though the public only recently became aware of the name change, her father appeared on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast in March and said it was nothing new to the teen’s parents.
“She’s been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade,” he said at the time. “She chose it. She went to school, one day she came home, or we went to the open house night or whatever, and the teacher’s like, ‘Kate’s doing great. She’s so nice.'”
Everyone else learned she now goes by Kate when Richie tagged her daughter’s Instagram account—@katemaddennn—in a post celebrating her 18th birthday. Richie also later confirmed Kate had been going by the name for some time.
Until recently, Kate has been keeping a pretty low profile, with both of her parents largely keeping her and her brother off their social media pages. Though the two have shared the occasional throwback photo here and there, it wasn’t until 2024 that the siblings made their red carpet debut alongside their parents at the “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead “reboot premiere.

In December 2024, Nicole opened up a bit about being a mom to two teenagers, saying she’s been transparent with them about her sometimes-wild past.
“They know everything I did,” she told Glamour “I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was. And I’ve actually found freedom in that. I didn’t want my kids having some big discovery about me.”
“I’ve always been very open and honest with my kids and hope that they are open and honest with me,” she added.
