Cannes Film Festival: Cate Blanchett, 57, Shines in Open Back Dress on ‘Garance’ Red Carpet

Cate Blanchett stole the spotlight when she walked the red carpet for “Garance” during the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals. The event took place on Sunday, May 17, in Cannes, France, and Blanchett’s outfit choice was gorgeous, daring, and a real fashion moment

The “Carol” actress walked the red carpet in a halterneck black dress with an open back. Large, colorful embroidered flowers and butterflies covered the dress; ribbons were tied on the sleeves, and tassel detailing created movement. She looked so beautiful!

To complete her look, Blanchett pulled her hair into a neat updo. She kept her makeup natural and her jewelry to a minimum, opting for silver star earrings. The result was striking.

The statement dress was created by Sarah Burton for Givenchy, and although it has appeared on the runway for their Fall 2026 collection, “Blanchett is the first star to wear the viral creation on the red carpet,” Vogue reports

Blanchett has been having incredible style moments at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, and another one of her outfits, a stunning black dress with a bold collar, has also caught the attention of fans. A video of the actress posing for photos on the red carpet was shared on the official Cannes Film Festival Instagram.

Fans reacted to the post with praise for Blanchett. “Iconic as always,” a comment reads. “Mother is mothering,” another person shared. Other reactions include, “the queen has arrived,” “Cate you’re an amazing actress, the best,” and “perfection.”

Cate Blanchett Embraces Aging & Her Career Continues to Evolve

Photos from the red carpet show Blanchett glowing; she looks so confident. At 57, her career continues to rise, defying sexism and ageism in Hollywood. The star has addressed how Hollywood often casts aside mature actresses, and the roles available to them often dry up.

“I took little roles that other actresses turned down, frankly,” she told Coveteur in 2017. “I think I unwittingly created a space for myself where I wasn’t pigeonholed as quickly, I thought to myself at the time that I was moving into the film industry quite late, actually—in my mid-twenties. Everyone was saying, ‘You really only get 5 years. By the time you’re 32, your career is over as a woman.’ But I came from the theater. I mean, it was frustrating, that prediction, but I thought, ‘I’m just going to go into the theater and I’m going to go back. You can be anything onstage.’ So I feel like I created a bit of a space to explore and not get locked into things.”

These are comments she echoed almost a decade later, in a 2025 interview with Business Insider. “The shelf life of actresses when I first came on the scene was about five years,” she said. But there have been significant changes.

“I think that female producers have more agency,” she said of Hollywood’s evolution. “There’s more females in the writing room, and the more diverse the industry is at base level, when things are developed, the more exciting it is for audiences.” Although Blanchett acknowledged that ageism and sexism still existed, she also shared how she feels that the industry is “very public-facing.”
