Chef Axel Oliva, co-founder of the Michelin-recognized restaurant Leche de Tigre, has died at 31, leaving his family, team, and the wider culinary community in mourning. Oliva passed away on March 29, 2026.
As per Texas Monthly, he built the restaurant with his brothers, Emil and Alec, in 2023. They confirmed the news with a message shared on social media.
“It’s with heavy hearts we share that our brother Axel Oliva tragically passed away yesterday,” the statement read. “We are taking time as a family and team to grieve.”
Restaurant Temporarily Closes as Family Requests Privacy
In the days following his passing, Leche de Tigre announced it will temporarily close from March 31 through April 2, allowing family and staff time to grieve together.
“We kindly ask for privacy as we process this loss,” the statement continued.
The restaurant also shared that a public memorial service will be held on April 2, giving the community an opportunity to come together and honor Oliva’s life.

Messages of grief and remembrance quickly spread, with fellow restaurateurs and community members reflecting on Oliva’s impact.
A local eatery paid tribute to Oliva, sharing a heartfelt message that reflected the community’s close-knit nature.

Whether he would catch us moving things around the property while he was walking his furry friends or getting some tacos, he never missed an opportunity to lend a hand. He will be deeply missed. One community member also shared a deeply personal tribute, reflecting on Oliva’s kindness during a time of grief.
“My heart breaks for you all. Axel was such a funny & kind soul. I lost my husband just 12 days ago, and Axel left such a sweet message about Ethan and his memories of him. Through all those tears, his message brought a smile to my face. Such a kind human being. He will be missed.”
Another message shared by a community member highlighted the warmth Oliva extended to everyone he met.
“He always treated us with so much kindness and showed amazing hospitality the moment we walked through the door. I’m truly so sorry for your loss. ❤️”
