Prue Leith is baring her heart and sharing a deeply personal reason for her decision to step away from “The Great British Bake Off.” When the longtime judge first announced in January that she would be leaving the beloved baking series, she said she hoped to slow down and enjoy more time away from work, including relaxed summers in Europe.
GettyBut the 85-year-old celebrity chef has now revealed that another concern quietly shaped her decision.
Leith said she has become increasingly aware of changes in her balance and physical stability.
A Vulnerable Moment on Set Made Her Reconsider
GettyLeith recently admitted that she has grown worried about “being less steady on her pins,” a realization that made her reflect on what continuing the show might look like as she gets older.
She appeared on “The Shift” podcast and shared how her health led her to quit the show.
Leith said the turning point came while filming an outdoor segment with her co-stars, Paul Hollywood and Noel Fielding.
During the shoot, the group was asked to film a lighthearted sequence in a field. What seemed like a simple moment quickly made her realize she was struggling with things that once felt easy.
As per The Daily Mail, Leith said: “I think the thing I found worrying is that I’m not very steady on my pins any more – not as good as I was.”
She recalled the moment during an appearance on the podcast.
“We weren’t judging cake – they wanted us to dance around this field. And it was a very hummocky, uneven, field, which of course Noel could really leap over brilliantly and Paul perfectly good. But I suddenly realised, ‘I’m going to go A over T, you know, this is going to be humiliating beyond belief.’ So I said ‘I don’t want to do it’, and they understood – they were fine.”
Leith said the experience marked the first time she had to openly admit there were things she could no longer comfortably do.
“And that was the first time I had to say ‘I can’t do that’. Gradually, there had been more and more of those things.”
Longtime Joke With Paul Hollywood Took On New Meaning
Leith also reflected on the playful on-screen dynamic she has long shared with fellow judge Paul Hollywood.
During the podcast conversation, she explained that Hollywood often teased her about the age difference between them.
The two share a 25-year age gap, which became a running joke on set over the years. “Ever since I’ve been on Bake Off, Paul has always teased me because I’m so much older than him.”
She recalled the lighthearted remarks that regularly came up while filming.
“He’d say things like ‘Come along deary, upsy daisy’, ‘time for your nap’ or ‘time for your tea’, or something or other. This is a running joke… but of late I’ve thought ‘Actually, you’re right mate’.”
With time, Leith said the jokes began to feel a little closer to reality, reminding her that the physical demands of filming were becoming harder than they once were.
Why Leith Felt It Was Time to Step Away
Looking back, Leith said that continuing on the show might only have made those challenges more noticeable.
“If I had stayed on Bake Off, I’d have asked for a ramp to get into my Winnebago. Paul’s teasing would have become absolutely true, so he would have probably stopped doing it.”
Her decision to step away marks a reflective moment in a long and celebrated career on television and in the culinary world.
Leith joined “The Great British Bake Off” in 2017 and quickly became a beloved presence among viewers. Her warmth, humor, and deep culinary knowledge helped shape the show’s welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
Although she is stepping back from judging duties, Leith’s influence on the series remains lasting.
For many fans, her thoughtful critiques and gentle wit have become part of what makes “The Great British Bake Off” so special.
