Few culinary competitions are as intense or as unpredictable as “Top Chef.” With pressure-packed quickfires, high-stakes elimination challenges, and brutally honest judging, even the most talented chefs can find themselves packing their knives earlier than expected. Over the years, several standout competitors have been eliminated before “Top Chef” fans felt their journeys were complete. Check out our list of five “Top Chef” contestants who were eliminated far too soon.
1. Tiffany Derry
Tiffany Derry quickly became a standout competitor during season 7 of “Top Chef.” Derry was known for her refined Southern cooking and strong technical skills. She consistently impressed the judges with her dishes, not even in the bottom until her shocking elimination in fifth place.
She had a confident approach in the kitchen and an ability to execute under pressure. This made her feel like a frontrunner for most of the season, and many fans were shocked when she didn’t win. While she was eliminated before the finale, she has gone on to do a lot, including being a mentor on “Worst Cooks in America” and a judge on the upcoming season of “MasterChef” on FOX.
2. Nyesha Arrington
Restaurant Wars and double elimination team challenges are usually the downfall for some of the best competitors on “Top Chef.” That is what happened to Nyesha Arrington during season 9.
Arrington quickly built a reputation for bold flavors and polished presentations. However, she was forced to pair up and, shockingly, was eliminated from the competition in eleventh place!
She did go on to win “Last Chance Kitchen” four times, but she truly went to shine after the show. She was named LA Chef of the Year by Eater and is regularly a judge on other shows, including her current role on “Next Level Chef” on FOX.
3. Katsuji Tanabe
Katsuji Tanabe became one of the most memorable personalities in “Top Chef” history thanks to his sharp wit and fearless cooking style. Tanabe competed during season 12 and became one of the few contestants to win three challenges in a row.
Despite that early dominance, Tanabe was eliminated in sixth place. He was known for taking big culinary swings, and it was a dish with too many ingredients that took him out. He did come back to compete on “Top Chef: Mexico” and “Top Chef: Charleston.”
4. Stephanie Cmar
It’s been quite a journey for Stehanie Cmar on “Top Chef.” She took part in the qualifying rounds on the first episode of “Top Chef: Seattle,” alongside her best friend and current “Top Chef” host, Kristen Kish. Cmar was not chosen to move on to compete on the show.
From there, she was invited back to compete on “Top Chef: New Orleans.” She finished in seventh place after the worst-performing chef for that challenge was unable to be eliminated due to his immunity.
She then came back for “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” and finished in second place. Maybe she comes back again and wins?
5. Gregory Gourdet
Was Gregory Gourdet eliminated too soon? I mean, he made the finals of season 12, but lost. He couldn’t have made it any further, but it seemed like he was prepped to win that season.
He won five elimination challenges, placed high in four other elimination challenges, and won four quickfires. However, he lost to Mei Lin in the finale.
Gourdet came back to compete on “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” and, again, he looked prepped for a win. He won four elimination challenges and two quickfires, but it was a white truffle challenge that took him out, finishing in fifth place. He would go on to open a restaurant in Portland that won Best New Restaurant at the James Beard awards.
