Over the years, Hallmark star Lacey Chabert has fully embraced many of her characters. Many of them have even blended seamlessly with her real-life persona. Some, like Melanie from “Matchmaker Santa,” or Emily from “Haul Out the Holly,” may have been inspired by her intense love of Christmas. Other characters, like Claudia from “Party of Five,” were inspired by her ability to play the violin.
Her ‘Plastics’ character, Gretchen Wieners, from “Mean Girls,” is still considered one of her most iconic roles. Lacey may not have a lot in common with the insecure and gossipy Gretchen, but the character remains one of her favorite roles.
‘It Just Felt Right’: Lacey Chabert Remembers Filming Beloved ‘Mean Girls’
While appearing on “Live With Kelly and Mark” on November 3, Lacey revealed that she thinks it’s “amazing” that, 21 years later, people continue to love “Mean Girls.”
The actress has previously spoken about her love for Gretchen and how much she adores revisiting the character. “It really bonds you when you’re a part of something that ends up beloved by people,” she said on the show in 2023.
“When you’re in something, you don’t know how it’s going to be received,” she continued. “I just remember the feeling, though, that every day we were making each other laugh. And it just felt right, and I was like, ‘I think this is going to turn out pretty good.'”
Lacey Chabert Loves to Revisit her ‘Mean Girls’ Character
In 2020, the original cast came together for a Zoom call to discuss the film, organized by Tina Fey and Katie Couric. Lacey, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Jonathan Bennett, and others took part, and the leads even recreated their iconic four-way phone call.
A few years later, Lacey, Lindsay, and Amanda reunited to make several commercials for Walmart. This time, fans got a glimpse of Gretchen as a mom. Karen (Amanda) became a weather reporter, and Cady (Lindsay), a school guidance counselor. Gretchen is still trying to make fetch happen, and her daughter has become the ‘new’ Regina George. She is also still using her dad’s memory — “the inventor of the toaster strudel” — to try to get her way.
When asked about a “Mean Girls” reboot, Lacey has said that she’d “love it.” However, in 2024, the “Mean Girls” Broadway musical was adapted into a film with an entirely new cast. Since then, there hasn’t been much talk of a continuation with the original cast.
