Jonathan Scott is thrilled to see modern, bland design trends fading, while more eclectic and colorful decor gains popularity. On February 17, 2026, the longtime HGTV star said the shift permits him to “finally just let my freak flag fly.”
That’s what he told “Homeworthy” host Allison Kenworthy during a livestream interview alongside his twin brother, Drew Scott, as they appeared at the Kitchen & Bath Show (KBIS) in Orlando. Jonathan, who oversees the Property Brothers’ empire of more than 12,000 home design products, said that although he’s perfectly capable of modern design, he’s really a more “traditional guy” when it comes to decor.
Jonathan Scott Says He Loves Finding ‘Statement’ Pieces No One Else Has
Talking with Kenworthy about their design influences and preferences, Jonathan said, “I love artisanal, handcrafted elements. Real detail, bold patterns, use of texture and color.”
Recalling how he gravitated to those styles even as a kid, he explained, “Growing up, when we would travel to visit family in Scotland, or anywhere we would go, it was always more of that old-world, traditional feel. Now we’re seeing this massive shift in design back to that, and I love that, finally, I can just let my freak flag fly and show all those elements.”
“There’s a lot of stuff out there that feels kind of cookie-cutter and repetitive, and I’m like, ‘That’s not me,'” Jonathan said, adding, “This is where it’s great to find vintage pieces that you can incorporate into a more eclectic design. I love antiquing, love finding something that nobody else is going to find and make a statement out of it.”
The “Celebrity IOU” star said that he thinks “through every space, every room shouldn’t be the same. You can have certain elements that tie through different rooms, but you want it to feel different so you’re not just walking through a boring, white museum.”
Jonathan Scott & Zooey Deschanel’s Design Style is Reflected in Their Homes
Jonathan and his fiancée, actress Zooey Deschanel, have designed two of their own homes with that eclectic, vintage style on full display.
In 2020, the couple fell in love with a 1938 five-bedroom home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, and spent two years renovating it to their liking. They mixed patterns and fabrics everywhere, used bold colors and classic furniture, turning the abode into a creative but traditional oasis.
On the other side of the country, the couple did much of the same in their New York City apartment. In October, they opened the doors to their fully renovated Manhattan getaway, giving Architectural Digest a look at the meticulous design and decor in every inch of the gorgeous space.
The couple also teamed up with luxe interior designer Young Huh, named one of Architectural Digest’s top 100 creatives in 2024. The outlet noted she’s “known for her deft layering of historic European elements with fresh patterns, livable layouts, and romantic use of color.”
Huh told Architectural Digest that the celeb couple wanted “nothing modern,” hoping instead for “a sense of history” and plenty of color. The result is an explosion of patterns, vibrant hues, vintage treasures, and lighting that’s both quirky and elegant.
