Two years after a rift between HGTV’s popular mother-daughter renovation team, Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine, ended their hit show, “Good Bones,” the two have made strides in healing their relationship off-screen.
Noting that the deterioration of their relationship happened over a long period of time, Starsiak Hawk told People in an interview published on January 13, 2026, “It took us a lot of time to get there. So I think it takes a lot of time to kind of get out of it as well.”
Mina Starsiak Hawk Says She Spent Holidays With Her Mom
In a big improvement since their show ended in the fall of 2023, the mother-daughter duo are on speaking terms again, Starsiak Hawk told People, and periodically spend time together.
“We were all together for the holidays, so we’re all amicable,” she told the outlet. “We’re not like best friends that braid each other’s hair on Saturday nights or anything, but no, it’s good.”
Starsiak Hawk announced in August 2023 that the eighth season of “Good Bones” would be the last. Two weeks later, she stunned fans by revealing she was estranged from her mom and brothers, who were also part of the show.
During a very emotional episode of her “Mina AF” podcast that month, she said, ““My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are in a kind-of-like-nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated.”
By that September, she told People that the drama with her mom included a “knockdown drag-out fight” while filming the first episode of the eighth season.
Mina Starsiak Hawk Will Return to HGTV This Spring & Karen E. Laine is Working as a Lawyer
HGTVIn the years since their rift, Starsiak Hawk and Laine have been busy. Starsiak Hawk has continued to renovate homes in Indianapolis, and has made multiple appearances on HGTV including an episode of “House Hunters: All Stars.”
HGTV announced in October 2025 that its seventh season of “Rock the Block” will, for the first time, feature HGTV stars past and present, paired with a celebrity partner. Starsiak Hawk, who spent eight seasons starring on “Good Bones,” will return, teaming up with former NFL star and Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis. The show is expected to premiere in early 2026.
She told People that while she was filming the show in Las Vegas, her family “came out and visited and they got to see the house and the set,” noting that they “very much missed” her being on TV.
Their visit reminded the kids of having HGTV crews around, she said, and kept asking, “‘Mom, when are you going to build houses again on TV? The cameras aren’t around anymore. When are we going to do that again?’”
Laine, meanwhile, split from her fourth husband and sold the North Carolina property where she had planned to retire after restoring it for a 2024 “Good Bones” spinoff (on which she and Starsiak Hawk appeared separately, with updates on their lives). In May 2025, Laine — who worked as a lawyer before “Good Bones” — announced that she had joined the Indianapolis law firm of criminal defense attorney Josiah Swinney.

I am wishing Mina good luck in all her endeavors, she is a strong person and a fighter, go for it you are talented and very special.
Look forward to seeing you, Mina.
As far as mom’s concerned, been there, done that…twice.
Good luck!
If Mina is estranged from that many people in her family then she is at fault.
Not true! There could be dynamics of a narcissist involved that tears the family apart. The scapegoat child gets alienated from the flying monkeys. I’m not saying that’s the case but be careful casting such a quick judgement. Mom has been married 4 times, that might be saying something as well or maybe not!
