‘Property Brothers’ Talk Retirement, But It’s Not What You Think

The “Property Brothers” are sharing the one Christmas decor trend they’d love to see retired. HGTV stars Jonathan and Drew Scott discussed their top holiday decorating tips and weighed in on whether to buy a real or artificial tree.

Jonathan and Drew Scott Share Thoughts on ‘Cheesy’ Christmas Decor

The “Property Brothers” stars are giving their honest take on one Christmas trend they are hoping falls out of favor.

Thankfully, it’s not twinkling Christmas lights or colorful ornaments they’re talking about — Jonathan and Drew are hoping to see an end to the overuse of holiday signs.

Instead of going for obvious messaging on signs, they suggest bringing holiday magic to your home with other decor.

In a November 2024 interview with Good Housekeeping, Jonathan explained, “You have to make sure it’s classy. You don’t want something tacky. It can get real cheesy, real fast.”

The brothers offered up some pro tips for the season, such as not solely sticking to red and green for the color palette. “Whatever your personality is, bring it out in your holiday decor,” Drew explained.

The HGTV stars also recommended avoiding glitter. “Do what you want in your own house, but don’t send someone else a decor item that has glitter because you can never get it out of your home,” Drew noted.

Drew & Jonathan Scott Weigh In on Real vs. Fake Christmas Trees

As for the Christmas tree, the “Property Brothers” stars recommend artificial over a real tree that can be used year after year.

“Artificial trees are the way to go because one, you don’t have to cut down a tree,” Jonathan said. “Two, they last as long as you want to keep them.”

He added, “And the greatest part: trees that come with the lights already strung. And the ones we design, when the pole attaches to the different sections, it auto illuminates. You don’t have to do anything.”

In a December 2024 Instagram video, Jonathan shared three tips for decorating a Christmas tree.

His first tip involved layering the lights. “Different kinds of lights offer a little bit different dimension,” he explained.

Jonathan pointed out how larger lights combined with smaller LEDs that twinkle and LEDs that are steadily lit “just creates this illusion that’s beautiful.”

“Second tip, if you have an artificial tree, but you miss the smell of a real tree or how full that can look, we went to a tree lot and they gave us all of their trimmings from real trees,” he shared. “And then we stuffed all those real branches into the tree.”

The HGTV star added, “It smells really great and it also adds a real natural element with the branches poking out and fills it out.”

Jonathan shared an important third tip: “Don’t be afraid of tinsel.”

“It should be done in tasteful ways so you can still see your ornaments,” he explained.

  1. No tinsel please around babies and pets. This has been a cause of death for many pets who swallow the tinsel, especially cats. Babies who are crawling age put everything in their mouths. And tinsel attracts them to it.

  2. Hate to say it but the Brothers have turned into prissy Felix Ungers in their middle age: the words cheesy and tasteful are creeping into every opinion piece they publish. Ever heard of the eye of the beholder, guys?
