Tarek El Moussa Says Homeowners Must Fix the ‘Right Things’ Before Selling Their House — Here’s What They Are

If anyone knows the real estate industry, it’s HGTV star Tarek El Moussa.

After decades of experience and many personal hurdles Tarek knows exactly what it takes to successfully sell a home.

In a new interview, the “Flip or Flop” star shares some helpful tips to help homeowners find a buyer.

Tarek El Moussa Wants Homeowners To Pay Attention to the Small Things

Tarek El Moussa commonly receives requests for top renovation tips during interviews. In a recent video, the father of three admitted that anyone can turn their home around without needing to spend loads of money.

“So actually you know, after buying, fixing, and selling 1,000 houses, I’ve kind of identified what I feel are the most important things,” the HGTV star shared with Angi. He went on to detail how his company created a system that helps homeowners log what can be changed.

“I’m not talking about a fixer-upper. I’m talking about the average American homeowner. Before selling their house, one, I feel like it’s very important, declutter. Get someone in, take of half the stuff from every room, put it in a box, label the box.”

Tarek shared that most homeowners have way more items lying around the house than they actually need.

“Your closet, all your stuff, take 75% of the stuff out. Make your closet feel bigger,” the HGTV star continued. “Go to the front of your house and look at it with your eyes. You want green grass, you want flowers, you want painted trim, you want a new fresh color front door. It’s not about spending a fortune before selling your house. It’s about spending a little bit of money on the right things that will cause it to sell for more money and that much faster.”

The real estate expert went on to advise homeowners to pay attention to the little things, including lighting.

“It’s the details. You’re telling a story. In today’s market, where it’s slow and it’s difficult to sell houses, this is the most important time ever to do the right prepping and improving before you ever list your house.”

The El Moussas Have Plenty of Ideas For Home Improvement Projects

When Tarek and Heather El Moussa aren’t filming for HGTV, they’re giving advice to fans on social media. On Instagram, the power couple dished on even “weird” fixes homeowners can make to improve their home’s value.

As in the Angi interview, Tarek emphasized the importance of maximizing the space. But this time, he also touched on the importance of odor elimination.

“Deep clean carpets and textiles, change HVAC filters, dust vents, and kill any pet or cooking odor so buyers never start the tour with a negative,” he shared.

At the end of the day, Tarek and Heather El Moussa believe it’s best to make a home feel as welcoming and pleasant as possible for potential buyers. Fans can’t wait to see more helpful tips they have to share.

HGTV viewers are excited to see “The Flip Off” season 2 on the network, likely later in 2026.
