The Los Angeles wildfires in January devastated so many homes, including Zooey Deschanel and her sister Emily Deschanel’s family home. Luckily, she has recruited her fiancé, HGTV‘s “Property Brothers” star Jonathan Scott, to help rebuild the house in the Pacific Palisades.
Zooey Deschanel & Jonathan Scott’s Rebuild Project
Deschanel and Scott have been engaged since 2023, and together they are working on fixing up the home. “We’re rebuilding my parents’ house. We’re rebuilding their house in non-combustible materials — it’s really cool to learn about all that,” she told People. She continued, “We just started. It takes a while to get everything designed. It takes a while to just get everything squared away.” This is excellent news for the family, and their 1920s Spanish revival house will be restored to all its glory.
Zooey Deschanel’s Beautiful Family Home
This is not the first time the actress has discussed her parents’ home. In January, she posted several photos on Instagram of the house in its glory days, then another showing it after the fire. The combination of photos paints a heartbreaking picture of a couple in their 80s losing their home, a place where so many cherished memories were made.
In the post’s caption, Deschanel shared her thoughts in an emotional message. “My childhood home. A marvel of 1920s Spanish revival architecture,” she began. “Full of too many incredible memories to count, it was one of the oldest homes in the Palisades and so spectacularly beautiful. It was not a mansion, but it was cozy and lovely and unique and perfect to me. One of my friends growing up called it ‘The Church’ because the 14-foot ceilings with stained glass windows in the living room cast colorful shadows at the end of the day. And to me it was holy, a sanctuary where we felt most safe.”
She listed some of the memories they have from their time in the home, including Christmas and birthdays. It was not just the home that was affected by the fire, but all of the belongings within it, including artwork, the “family photos that lined the hallways,” and “the furniture my great-great-grandfather built.”
Deschanel acknowledged how so many other families had also been impacted by the fires, but ended her message with gratitude. She thanked all those who helped put out the fires, those who rallied around the family during their time of need, and those who helped her parents who were “left with nothing.” Fans rallied around Deschanel in the post’s comments, sending their love and well-wishes.
