Khloé Kardashian’s ex Tristan Thompson is taking another major step in caring for his younger brother, Amari Thompson.
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the NBA star has officially filed for conservatorship over Amari, 19, who lives with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a severe form of epilepsy that causes multiple seizures and can lead to developmental delays and other long-term disabilities.
Per the filing, Tristan stated that Amari is unable to properly care for his personal needs, including his physical health, food, clothing and shelter. The documents also noted that Amari has an intellectual disability and developmental delay, making him unable to manage financial resources or protect himself from fraud or undue influence.
The filing also states that Amari cannot meaningfully comment on the choice of conservator because of his condition. However, Amari does not object to the conservatorship and does not wish to contest it.
Court documents further explained that Amari cannot live independently, relies on Tristan for daily care and is unable to handle financial transactions on his own.
Tristan Became Amari’s Legal Guardian After Their Mother’s Passing
This is not the first time Tristan has stepped into a legal caregiving role for his younger brother.
In February 2024, Tristan was granted legal guardianship of Amari after the passing of their mother, Andrea Thompson, who passed away from a heart attack in January 2023. At the time, Amari was still a minor.
According to Page Six, Tristan also stated in previous court documents that their father, Trevor Thompson, had not played a role in raising Amari since 2014. A judge reportedly ruled that reunification with their father was not considered viable due to neglect and abandonment under California law.
Amari’s condition requires around-the-clock care. Tristan shared that his brother has epilepsy along with other medical conditions that make him unable to care for himself or seek employment, per People.
“Amari is fully disabled, so he doesn’t talk or walk on his own, so everything is assisted,” Tristan told the outlet, adding that the two full-time caregivers helping support Amari have been “a blessing and angels in disguise.”
He also said caring for Amari takes “a village,” especially after losing their mother.
Khloé Kardashian Helped Step In as Amari’s Primary Caregiver
Khloé Kardashian has also played a major role in helping care for Amari.
In July 2025, Khloé revealed on her “Khloé in Wonder Land” podcast that she became Amari’s main caretaker because Tristan’s NBA schedule requires him to constantly travel between states.
She explained that frequent flights are not ideal for Amari because he has multiple seizures a day and said it made more sense for him to stay in Los Angeles with her.
“He is severely disabled,” Khloé said, explaining that he cannot walk or talk and needs consistent support.
She also shared that California’s weather is good for him and said she loves having Amari as part of her household. Khloé, who shares daughter True and son Tatum with Tristan, said having Amari around helps teach her children, nieces and nephews compassion and understanding.
She said the family’s goal is simple: “We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how. And he deserves that.”
