Marvel Star Admits He Was Rejected as ‘Batman,’ But Hey, He’s Doing Pretty Well

Chris Pratt is laughing off a superhero swing that did not quite land. The actor recently admitted that he once pitched himself for the role of Batman to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, only to be swiftly shut down in what he described as a very clear response.

During a recent interview, Pratt shared that he reached out to Gunn with a playful idea, sending over a photoshopped image of himself wearing Batman’s mask. The message was meant to be lighthearted, but Gunn’s reply made it obvious the Dark Knight would not be calling.

“I did it in Photoshop and James just said, ‘Haha,’” Pratt recalled. “It’s safe to say I am not going to be Batman,” he added, confirming the exchange left little room for interpretation, per the New York Post.

While the moment was brief, it offered fans a rare glimpse into how casually even major casting ideas can sometimes begin, and end, in Hollywood.

Why Pratt Knew Batman Was a Long Shot

Pratt did not seem surprised by the rejection and admitted that stepping into such an iconic role would have been a massive challenge. Reflecting on the legacy of Batman, he acknowledged that the character has been portrayed so many times that finding a truly fresh take is increasingly difficult.

“There’s been so many Batmans,” Pratt said, noting that certain creative choices, like Christian Bale’s distinctive Batman voice, became so recognizable that they now risk veering into parody. He explained that reinventing a character with decades of cinematic history comes with enormous pressure and inevitable comparisons, per Parade.

Pratt also pointed to the many interpretations that shaped the role, from Adam West and Michael Keaton to Christopher Nolan’s darker vision and Robert Pattinson’s recent portrayal. With so many celebrated performances already defining the character, Pratt admitted he was not convinced he would have been the right fit.

James Gunn, who took over DC Studios in 2022, is currently rebuilding the DC Universe from the ground up. While David Corenswet has already been cast as the new Superman, Gunn has confirmed that Pattinson’s Batman will remain separate from his DC timeline, leaving the studio’s next official Batman casting still unannounced.

What’s Next for Pratt in the Superhero World

Despite the playful rejection, Pratt made it clear there were no hard feelings. He emphasized that the exchange with Gunn was friendly and joked about rather than a serious career move. The actor also expressed continued enthusiasm for future superhero projects, particularly within the Marvel universe.

Pratt famously starred as Star-Lord in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, which Gunn directed. While Gunn is now focused on DC, Pratt said he would be happy to collaborate with Marvel again in any capacity and believes there is still plenty of story left to tell for his character.

Marvel’s upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday,” expected later this year, will bring back several major stars, including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, though it has not been confirmed whether Star-Lord will appear.

For now, Pratt seems content letting the Batman idea live on as a funny “what if” moment. As he made clear, the pitch was never that serious, and Gotham’s cape and cowl will remain untouched.

“It’s safe to say I am not going to be Batman.”
