Wynonna Judd Emotionally Reacts to the Loss of Grateful Dead Founder Bob Weir

Grateful Dead cofounder and guitarist Bob Weir died of lung issues January 10, 2026 at the age of 78. Now, one of his old friends and collaborators, Wynonna Judd, is speaking out about what the trailblazing musician meant to her.

On January 11, Judd reacted to Weir’s death in a heartfelt Instagram post. She shared a sweet Instagram carousel displaying a collection of photos she called “some of my favorite moments with Bob Weir.”

Judd wrote in the caption of her tribute post, “My heart is broken over this loss. To the world he was Bob (Robby) Weir. To me…he was and will always be…MY ‘Sir’ Robert Weir.”

The “She Is His Only Need” singer then touched on the kindness and compassion Weir showed when her mother, Naomi Judd, died in April 2022. She wrote, “When Mom passed, we held our (private) celebration of life in Nashville. Sir Robert got the call & showed up with no questions asked. No publicity, no cameras, not even an expectation for him to take the stage. But he insisted on showing up the best way he knew how. He joined the stage with my family, friends, and musical peers. I will FOREVER honor the friendship that turned family.”

She continued, “At times, he was a tough nut to crack, but I will always take pride in the fact that I could get him to laugh. Sir Robert Weir…you have left a lasting imprint on my life.”

Judd finished her statement by calling Weir “a legend,” and declaring, “I lost a friend.”

Fans Reacted to Wynonna Judd’s Tribute for Bob Weir

Fans were moved by the 61-year-old’s moving tribute to Weir. One reacted by commenting, “I always remember watching y’all sing ‘Ramble On Rose’ together. The best.”

Another mourner commented, “I’m sorry to hear you’ve lost someone so special in your life. I greatly appreciate the vulnerability and raw honesty that you share in your posts. I was fortunate enough to meet you and spending a few minutes with you backstage at the Grand Old Opry as a photographer for the Farm Bureau Foundation Fundraiser in which you headlined. I will always cherish my interaction with you as you were so welcoming real and kind in the minutes that we spent after your performance. You’ll always be my queen of country.”

Was Bob Weir Adopted?

In one of his final interviews before his death, The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weird talked about being adopted. He confirmed to ASX TV that his adoptive parents were “people with means” and that they wanted him to attend the prestigious Stanford University in California.

He reflected, “I aspired to go to Stanford, but it was a goal too far. It was out of reach. Maybe I might’ve managed to get into a good school if I stuck with it, but music was all I could think about.”
