Eliminated ‘MasterChef’ Contestant Dave Patera Reveals What Really Happened During His Final Cook

Season 16 of the hit reality TV food competition show, “MasterChef,”with Gordon Ramsay is almost at an end. And self-proclaimed food creator and recipe developer Dave Patera was one of the contestants (a.k.a. home cooks) competing during the Global Gauntlet-themed season. But sadly, his journey came to an end during Episode 15, which aired August 26, 2026.

The episode featured a classic “MasterChef” challenge, the Restaurant Takeover. This season “the Top 6 home cooks [were] split into teams to put their skills to the ultimate test and take over Cluny Bistro for a packed dinner service,” according to IMDb. And while “the MasterChef kitchen [may have] prepared them for this moment… running a real restaurant leaves no room for error.”

Unfortunately, things did not go exactly as planned for Patera during the challenge. In fact, an unexpected issue ended up creating even more problems as he and his team tried to keep up with the dinner service.

Following his elimination, Patera took to the r/MasterChef Reddit page to share some behind-the-scenes information about what viewers didn’t get to see. And honestly, fans had a ton of love for him.

Dave Patera Explains What Went Wrong With the Salmon

Patera started his Reddit post by thanking the people who had been following his journey throughout the season. He also admitted that watching his elimination back wasn’t exactly easy.

“That last episode – yikes. A tough watch. 😬”

Yep, it seems like Patera knew fans would have plenty of questions about what happened during the Restaurant Takeover. And he decided to give them a little bit of the behind-the-scenes story.

“What you may not have seen in the episode was us desperately trying to figure out what temperature our oven was set at so we could adjust the oven temp and/or cook time on the salmon.”

According to Patera, the commercial kitchen’s oven did not have a temperature label on its dial. There was a small thermometer inside the oven that could have helped, but it was accidentally knocked into an unreachable part of the oven at the beginning of the cook.

That meant Patera and his team suddenly had to figure out how hot the oven actually was while trying to prepare their food and keep up with a real restaurant service.

“I quickly realized that we had no idea how hot our oven was and following Chef Ramsay’s instructions to place the salmon in the oven for two or three minutes definitely wasn’t enough time at whatever temperature our oven was set at.”

Patera eventually changed his strategy and moved the salmon to the stovetop, where he could sear and baste it instead.

“You’ll see me later in the episode transition to cooking the salmon on the stovetop by searing & basting vs placing it in the oven to ensure it was cooking quickly and correctly but by that point – we were so far behind in service there was just no coming back from it.”

And the Crazy Pressure Being on ‘MasterChef’ Brings

And then, of course, there was Gordon Ramsay. Anyone who has watched “MasterChef” knows that Ramsay isn’t exactly known for quietly standing in the corner during a stressful dinner service. Patera said having the chef just feet away added another layer of pressure to an already difficult situation.

“Combine that with the immense pressure of Chef Ramsay standing 3 feet away screaming things like “where is the salmon?!” & “I need salmon now!” – it was a literal recipe for undercooked salmon, and my personal nightmare, lol. Definitely was not my finest moment in the kitchen but an amazing experience nonetheless.”

Let’s be real, that sounds like an incredibly stressful situation, especially when Patera was already trying to work with unfamiliar equipment and a packed restaurant service.

But despite how difficult the challenge was, it seems like Patera isn’t allowing one bad service to overshadow the experience he had on “MasterChef.”

Fans Are Showing Dave Patera Plenty of Support

After Patera shared his side of the story, fans on Reddit quickly jumped into the comments to let him know how much they enjoyed watching him compete.

One viewer made it very clear that Patera had been a favorite from the very beginning.

“I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU FROM DAY 1! Your food had heart, comfort, and passion. I really was so sad to see you go last episode because I really wanted you, Heidi, Jake, and Julia to be in the top 5.”

Another fan kept things simple, but the message was just as supportive.

“I really enjoyed you this season, and it was sad to see you go. Hold your head up high, you did great!”

The oven situation also caught the attention of another viewer, who clearly understood why Patera’s experience was so frustrating.

“Oh, man that sounds awful. Nuts to me that a professional oven wouldn’t have any indicator on it for temperature. You were definitely my favorite on this season. Congratulations on making it so far!”

Other fans focused on how much they enjoyed watching Patera compete, regardless of how his final challenge ended.

“Sorry it ended that way, Dave! I loved rooting for you, and I thought your food always looked great.”

Another commenter praised Patera for how he handled himself throughout the competition, admitting that they would have struggled under the same circumstances.

“You were a lot of fun to watch compete and carried yourself so well. I would’ve been a mess 😂. Thanks for the insider info about the oven issue. It must be ridiculously stressful to try cooking under that kind of pressure on unfamiliar equipment!”

And one final comment summed up what several fans seemed to be saying: one bad cook doesn’t define a contestant’s abilities.

“Being a bad cook and having a bad cook are completely different, and I think the majority of people who watched you on the show know you are really great at what you do.”

Honestly, it’s hard to argue with that.

What’s Next for Dave Patera?

Patera may have been eliminated from “MasterChef,” but he clearly made an impression on the people who watched him throughout the season. And yep, he isn’t exactly disappearing from the kitchen anytime soon.

Patera said he will be sharing more behind-the-scenes moments, recipes, and unique techniques that fans may not have gotten to see on the show through his Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube accounts under the username, DinnersWithDave.

So while his “MasterChef” journey has come to an end, it seems like there is still plenty more cooking content on the way.

The final three episodes of Season 16, “MasterChef: Global Gauntlet,” air on September 2, September 9, and September 16 at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
