Popular Singer Reveals Condition That Caused Him to Lose His Voice

Cody Simpson remains one of the most beloved pop singers from the early 2010s. However, the “Paradise” crooner and former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant recently took to social media to share some heartbreaking news- he currently can’t sing due to a previously undiagnosed vocal cord hemorrhage. However, while on the mend, he’s found other ways to make music.

Simpson took to Instagram on May 11 to share a photo of himself in what appeared to be a recording studio. He began in his caption, “Hey guys. I originally thought I could keep this private, but it’s come time I share what I’ve been going through.”

Simpson continued, “Just over a month ago, we discovered a serious hemorrhage on one of my vocal cords. It occurred due to my overzealousness in the studio singing through a sinus infection I didn’t know I had.”

He went on to say that he had previously assumed he was experiencing “fatigue” and continued recording “until one day I could no longer sing.” Simpson then explained that he is on vocal rest and has been “for weeks” now.

According to him, “I’ve just been prescribed another 2 weeks of silence in hopes of avoiding a surgery which demands a much longer recovery process. I’m back in the studio now writing strictly as a lyricist on mute with my collaborators, and hearing/writing my vocal melodies on my guitar (which I will eventually replace with my voice when I’m able to). Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Notably, this setback comes as Simpson is in the process of recording a new album. He concluded, “I’d like to bring you on the journey. I’ve been extremely up and down, but am now reframing this as a realignment for the long-term good. In the meantime, should I start sharing some of what I’ve already finished? – Cody.”

He Has New Music Out

Simpson has accomplished quite a bit in his career. In addition to music, he pursued professional swimming and even made the Australian Dolphins team. He then retired from the sport in June 2024. The next month, he released a new single, “Fly.”

Fast-forward to 2026, and Simpson began a new era with the release of an EP. This includes the songs “Baby Blue,” which he intends to call the upcoming album, and “When It Comes to Loving You.” He premiered a “Fight Club” themed music video for the latter of the two songs in April.

He told PEOPLE, “The dark and grittiness of the Fight Club-themed video added such an interesting layer of contrast to [the] glitzy ’80s pop nature of the song that I loved so much. The juxtaposition of light and dark is what art is all about to me. I also felt like the fight was such a metaphor to the thought that ‘there ain’t nothing I wouldn’t do when it comes to loving you’ — I’d even beat a guy to a pulp.”

Simpson said of returning to music, “Now felt like the perfect time to return to music, thanks to where pop music, and music in general, is right now. Pop is in the best place it’s been in years, and I was really excited to come back and play in the scene again.

All through my years as a professional swimmer, I was so excited about [the] eventual return, I felt like a bowstring pulled back. So when I was finally able to get back into the studio every day, it just poured out of me.”

His most recent album arrived in 2022.
