Surprise VIDEO: 1990s Rock Icon Sparks Major Reunion Rumors

Courtney Love has sparked new speculation about a possible Hole reunion.

On March 3, Love shared a compilation video of former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur on Instagram. The clip featured footage of Auf der Maur set to Hole’s 1999 song “Malibu.”

“So do we tell the kids about the tour,” Love wrote in the caption while tagging Auf der Maur.

Auf der Maur reposted the video to her Instagram Stories and responded with a brief message.

“Find me xo,” Auf der Maur wrote.

The exchange between the musicians quickly fueled speculation that the longtime bandmates could be considering bringing the band back to the stage.

How Hole Became 1 of the Biggest Alternative Rock Bands of the 1990s

Hole was founded in 1989 by Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson, according to People. The band became a prominent act in the 1990s alternative rock scene.

Auf der Maur joined the band as bassist in 1994. Other past members included drummer Patty Schemel and bassist Kristen Pfaff.

The group released its debut album, “Pretty on the Inside,” in 1991. The follow-up album, “Live Through This,” arrived in 1994 and helped expand the band’s audience.

Hole released “Celebrity Skin” in 1998. The album earned Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

Auf der Maur departed the band in 1999 and later joined The Smashing Pumpkins. Hole officially disbanded in 2002.

Love briefly revived the band in 2010 and released the album “Nobody’s Daughter” that same year.

Courtney Love & Melissa Auf der Maur Reconnected in Recent Years

Love and Auf der Maur have remained close over the years and have occasionally reunited for performances.

In 2012, the musicians performed together in New York City alongside Eric Erlandson and Patty Schemel.

More recently, Love and Auf der Maur reunited in the studio in 2024. It marked their first time recording together in 24 years.

Love also shared photos of the two together earlier this year. In January, she posted images of them drinking tea and relaxing on a couch.

Auf der Maur has spoken publicly about Love’s creative impact during the band’s early years.

“Those three albums [Pretty on the Inside, Live Through This, and Celebrity Skin] are all unique and incredible,” Auf der Maur said in a 2016 interview with Blast Echo.

She added, “Courtney [Love] is a once-in-a-generation piece of art. She is (expletive)incredible.”

Auf der Maur acknowledged that Love’s public image sometimes overshadowed the band’s music.

“And, yes, her drama sometimes overshadows the power of the band,” Auf der Maur said. “The power of the band, the arc of the albums, and her performing abilities, we have it all on tape everywhere.”

Courtney Love Previously Addressed Hole Reunion Possibilities

Love has offered mixed responses about the possibility of a Hole reunion in past interviews.

In a 2021 interview with Vogue, the singer said a reunion was unlikely.

“It would absolutely not happen,” Love said at the time. “And you guys have gotta get over it.”

Love added that she still maintains friendships with former bandmates.

“We’re all really good friends and Melissa and I are especially close — we talk every day,” Love said.

However, the singer hinted at a possible return to the band while performing with Billie Joe Armstrong’s cover band The Coverups in 2024.

During the performance, Love told the audience, “Later, I’ll be back in Hole.”

Love currently has a documentary titled “Antiheroine” that premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Auf der Maur is also preparing to release her memoir “Even the Good Girls Will Cry” on March 17.
