D’Angelo has been laid to rest after his death at 51 from pancreatic cancer. The soul legend was honored at a private funeral held Saturday, November 1, in Henrico, Virginia, according to a program shared by HuffPost deputy editor Philip Lewis.
The service, organized by D’Angelo’s longtime friend Bill McGee, was described as a “celebration of life.” Bishop Ralland V. Robinson led the ceremony and delivered the eulogy for the “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” singer, while Pastor Jamal Bryant shared a special video message.
Stevie Wonder, harpist Brandee Younger, and D’Angelo’s former band, The Soultronics, performed during the memorial. The family’s message in the program read, “We wish to express our profound gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of support. … Through music, love and light, Michael D’Angelo’s spirit will shine forever.”
Family & Friends Honor His Legacy
Questlove of The Roots helped organize the service and was personally thanked by the family for his support. On October 30, the musician paid tribute to his longtime friend in Rolling Stone, admitting he had long feared losing him.
“Truthfully, I wasn’t ready for that gut punch,” Questlove wrote. “I’d been bracing for it for some 25 years — since the deluge of [album] Voodoo in 2000. I always had a looming feeling concerning D like a ‘any moment now I will get ‘the call’ feeling. Most of our mavericks who fly that close to the sun never get to see that journey through.”
He reflected on the loss, adding, “And now here we are at 5:30 a.m. I had seconds to decide: How do I process this new reality? My preference was not to start my Tuesday morning … mourning.”
Loved Ones Reflect on His Final Days
D’Angelo’s family first confirmed his passing (as per Variety) on October 14 after a long battle with cancer. “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” they wrote in a statement.
“After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.”
They continued, “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all to join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
His Children Carry Forward His Spirit
The four-time Grammy winner is survived by three children: son Michael Archer, whom he shared with late soul singer Angie Stone, and two younger children, daughter Imani Archer and son Morocco Archer. All three were listed as speakers at the memorial.
In October, Michael, 27, reflected on the pain of losing both of his parents in the same year. “I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me,” he told People. “I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”
Imani also shared her heartbreak online, calling her father’s death an “immeasurable loss.” “You were my biggest hype man, my protector, my biggest musical inspiration, the kindest and most selfless man, and the best father anyone could’ve ever had,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Till the very end, you made sure to protect me from anything that would scare or hurt me. I love you so much Daddy. I wish I had more time to spend with you.”
