‘Idol’ Stars Shaken by Peer’s Passing at 51: ‘This Really Hurts’

The unexpected death of R&B icon D’Angelo on October 14, 2025, hit many of his peers in the music industry hard, including multiple “American Idol” stars, from Jennifer Hudson to Ruben Studdard, who shared their grief and shock via social media.

D’Angelo was a legendary R&B singer who helped pioneer the genre of music known as “neo-soul,” according to Variety. He died at age 51 following a private battle with pancreatic cancer.

A statement issued by D’Angelo’s family, per the Daily Mail, said, “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life… After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.”


‘American Idol’ Stars Including Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, & Randy Jackson Remember D’Angelo

EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson, one of the most successful alumni in “American Idol” history, posted a photo of D’Angelo and wrote, “This really hurts ! We lost a true original today. It just doesn’t seem real!! It can’t be . D’Angelo, your voice will live on forever. Rest well, King !!!”

“Name That Tune” co-host Randy Jackson, who was one of the original judges on “American Idol” when Hudson competed on the show, also shared his sadness over D’Angelo’s passing. Jackson posted a video in his Instagram Stories of D’Angelo performing and wrote, “Rest in power to an incredible legend 🙏🏽”


Multiple ‘American Idol’ Winners Paid Tribute to D’Angelo

Also among the “American Idol” stars who shared their grief over D’Angelo’s death were multiple “American Idol” winners, including season two champ Ruben Studdard. He posted a photo of the singer in his Instagram Stories and wrote, “Thank you for all of the amazing music. RIP D’Angelo 🥺🥺🥺”

Fantasia, who won the third season of “American Idol” — the same season in which Hudson took sixth place — posted a photo of D’Angelo in her Instagram Stories and wrote in large lettering, “Noooooo Way! 💔”

Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips also posted a photo in his Instagram Stories of D’Angelo’s “Spanish Joint” single art and wrote, “No words. Sad day for music. Genius. Inspirational. I’ve loved D’Angelos music for a long time. Rest well and thank you for inspiring so many all over the world.”


Many Fans & Other Celebrities Shared Messages About D’Angelo, Too

Among other celebrities who publicly mourned D’Angelo’s death on October 14 was Beyoncé, who posted his photo on her website and, addressing him by his given name, wrote, “Rest in peace, Michael Eugene Archer, known to the world of music as the inimitable D’Angelo. We thank you for your beautiful music, your voice, your proficiency on the piano, your artistry. You were the pioneer of neo-soul and that changed and transformed rhythm & blues forever. We will never forget you.”

Actor Jamie Foxx posted a lengthy tribute to D’Angelo, which said in part, “God put you here for a reason and we were all lucky enough to see what God had made… That’s why today real tears run down my face … to hear the news that God has taken one of his special creations home… I know God doesn’t make mistakes… But this one hurts like hell… rest up my friend… you will be missed forever… But your music and your impression will be felt for generations to come”

Thousands of fans also shared their grief on social media, including in response to posts from celebrities. On Hudson’s tribute to D’Angelo, one person wrote, “OMG, I’m shocked, I’m learning this through your post ☹️☹️☹️. I was learning to his songs earlier today, that’s so sad, such a unique talent and voice !!! ☹️✨”

“Cannot believe this,” another commented. “Rest in peace 😢”
