On Tuesday, October 14, Imani Archer shared a heartfelt photo of the “Brown Sugar” singer on her Instagram Stories following the news of his death. In the image, D’Angelo, who died at 51 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, plays guitar while Archer sits beside him smiling.
Over the photo, she added three mended heart emojis, a simple, powerful gesture that spoke volumes.
Her quiet post quickly struck a chord with fans, who flooded social media with condolences and memories of the Grammy-winning artist whose soulful music helped define a generation. In a statement to Variety, D’Angelo’s family confirmed his passing and reflected on the loss of their beloved father, son, and brother.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” they said. “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”
They added, “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time, but invite you all to join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
A source confirmed to People that D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, had been in hospice care for two weeks following months of treatment for pancreatic cancer.

As news of D’Angelo’s passing spread, tributes poured in from across the music world.
DJ Premier, who collaborated with the soul icon on the 1998 hit “Devil’s Pie,” shared a moving message on X. “Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo,” he wrote. “We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D’. Love you, KING.”
Throughout his groundbreaking career, D’Angelo worked with some of music’s most influential voices, including Questlove, Common, Q-Tip, J Dilla, Lauryn Hill, and Raphael Saadiq.
In addition to Imani, D’Angelo is survived by his two sons, Morocco and Michael Archer Jr., who also goes by Swayvo Twain. He shared his eldest son, Michael, with Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Angie Stone, who tragically died in March following a car crash.
D’Angelo’s final years were rich with creativity. In 2024, he collaborated with Jay-Z on “I Want You Forever,” featured on The Book of Clarence soundtrack. That same year, Raphael Saadiq told Rolling Stone that D’Angelo had been working on new music that would have marked his first solo release since his acclaimed 2014 album Black Messiah and his 2018 single “Unshaken.”
