The music world has faced a loss—British DJ and producer Matt Tolfrey has passed away at the age of 44, as confirmed by DJMag. The founder of Leftroom Records was beloved throughout the global electronic music scene for his talent, humor, and generosity of spirit. News of his passing was shared by his close friend and collaborator Damian Lazarus, who posted an emotional tribute on Instagram Monday.
“This weekend we lost a key member of the extended Crosstown Rebels family,” Lazarus wrote. “Matt Tolfrey played a major role in our music scene and will be very sorely missed.”
Lazarus went on to reflect on their two decades of friendship and collaboration. “He produced key singles and remixes for us and helped bring together so many artists who shared his love for the music,” he said. “Matt believed in community and in connecting people both on and off the dancefloor.”
He closed his message with a heartfelt farewell: “His cheeky smile and humor will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Matt, especially his beautiful daughters, Arla and Beau. RIP Matt, you left the room too early.”
A Life Dedicated to Music
Born in 1980, Tolfrey grew up in Bahrain before returning to the U.K. as a teenager, according to The Daily Mail. His DJ career began while studying in Nottingham, where he quickly made a name for himself playing at The Bomb. His big break came in 2004 after a chance call from Fabric’s Craig Richards, who invited him to perform at the iconic London club.
“That’s how it all began,” he told DJ Magazine in 2012. “Once I played at Fabric, I started getting booked elsewhere because it was such a big thing.”
Tolfrey went on to produce music for respected labels like Crosstown Rebels, REKIDS, and Phonica before founding Leftroom Records. He released his debut album Word of Mouth in 2012 and followed it with All Shapes and Sizes in 2020.
Tributes From the Music Community
Following his passing, tributes poured in from fellow artists and industry peers. Classic Music Company wrote, “Classic are devastated to hear of the passing of Matt Tolfrey; DJ, producer, label runner, manager, and importantly our friend.”
They added, “Matt was a longtime supporter and fan of all things Classic. We have fond memories of the times he played for us and when we all hung out. We send love to all of Matt’s friends and family.”
DJ Heidi also remembered her friend with touching words: “Matt Tolfrey was someone whom I gravitated towards immediately. His humor was infectious. He was such a fun person to be around and unbelievably kind.”
She added, “We played together so many times across this planet. My heart goes out to Hayley and his beautiful daughters. This is beyond heartbreaking. Make sure you tell your friends and family how much you love them. Life is precious.”
Throughout his two-decade career, Tolfrey became known for his authenticity, passion for collaboration, and ability to unite artists around the world. His music, laughter, and legacy will continue to echo through dancefloors for years to come.
As Lazarus so poignantly said, “Matt left the room too early — but the rhythm he created will never fade.”
