The music industry has reacted to the passing of D’Angelo. The musician, whose real name is Michael Eugene Archer, died on Tuesday, October 14. He was 51.
There has been an outpouring of love for D’Angelo following he news of his passing, and key figures in the music industry have celebrated him for his contributions to the neo-soul genre. He will be missed, and many have reflected on his brilliance, but D’Angelo also leaves behind a family.
D’Angelo’s Loving Family

D’Angelo is survived by his three children. The “Brown Sugar” singer was a father to Michael Archer Jr., his first child, whom he shares with musician Angie Stone. Michael, who goes by the stage name Swayvo Twain, was born on February 28, 1997, People reports. His mother sadly died in a car accident in March 2025.
D’Angelo was also a father to his daughter, Imani, and son, Morocco. Not much is known about their lives, especially Morocco, his third child. He has chosen to live his life outside of the limelight. Imani has followed in her father’s footsteps with a career as a musician. She was born in Los Angeles in 1999.
“I was born in Los Angeles but I moved around the East Coast until I was about 13 years old. The place I lived in the longest was Kissimmee, Florida,” she told Bold Journey in November 2024. “Moving to LA was such a culture shock at that age, but I knew I was in the right place for my music career to blossom.”
She also discussed her music. “I really got into making my own music around 16, and it’s been a very long journey since then,” she said. “From developing my sound, finding my voice, and learning how to write songs, it’s been a learning curve.”
D’Angelo’s Family Makes a Statement

D’Angelo’s family made a statement after his passing. “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” the statement reads, People reports. “After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.”
The statement continues, “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
