An iconic voice from the 1980s metal scene is opening up about the health issues that forced him to step away from the stage.
During a recent appearance on the “Beardo & Weirdo” podcast, former Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider shared that doctors warned him his performing days might be over after a series of medical evaluations. The singer said the conversation ultimately led him to withdraw from the band’s planned 50th-anniversary reunion tour.
Snider, now 70, explained that years of high-energy performances had taken a physical toll, prompting a blunt warning from his doctor to continue at the same level.

Snider told podcast hosts that the conversation with his doctor left little room for interpretation.
“First of all, becoming face-to-face with mortality,” Snider said. “And as the doctor said to me, ‘Dude, you’re great, amazing for a 71-year-old. But you can’t do that anymore. You’re done. Your body parts are worn out, and you got nothing left.’”
The rocker said the message became even clearer during a follow-up visit with a surgeon who reviewed his X-rays.
“[He said], ‘Do you jump around much?’ ‘Yeah. That’s kind of what I do,’” Snider recalled. “He goes, ‘Yeah, well, you’re done.’”
Snider built his reputation as the energetic frontman of Twisted Sister during the band’s rise in the 1980s, known for performances that involved constant movement and high-energy stage antics. He said those decades of physically demanding shows eventually caught up with him.
Health Issues Changed Reunion Tour Plans
Snider initially hoped medical treatment would allow him to return to touring. He underwent a hip replacement and believed the surgery might make it possible for him to continue performing.
However, further medical testing revealed additional concerns. Doctors discovered previously undiagnosed heart issues along with hypertension, creating more complications for a potential return to the stage.
Snider attempted a short comeback when he joined Lita Ford for a guest performance. But he said the moment quickly reminded him of his doctors’ warnings.
“Three bounces—knee goes. And I’m, like, ‘Whoa. Son of a bitch,’” Snider said. “And I’m just hearing that surgeon going, ‘You’re done. You’re done. You’re done.’”
Despite the setback, Snider said he has found peace with the decision to step back from touring.
Dee Snider Focuses on Family and New Projects
Today, Snider said he is focused on spending time with his family at his compound in North Carolina while continuing to pursue creative projects outside of touring.
Those projects include directing his first film and hosting his long-running syndicated radio show “House of Hair,” which highlights classic heavy metal music.
Snider also reassured fans on social media that he remains content with the choice to step away from physically demanding performances, explaining that he wants to protect the time and energy he still has.
Twisted Sister’s planned anniversary performances will still move forward. According to reports, former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach is expected to step in for several shows scheduled this fall.
