Mariah Carey is known for her powerful pop songs, but did you know she also recorded a grunge album in the ’90s? The singer opened up about that fact and the album’s possible release while appearing on “The Tonight Show.”
“Someone’s Ugly Daughter is the title,” Carey said of the album that’s attributed to a band named Chick, according to People. She added, “Never released.”
“But I do like the cover, and I drew this cover,” she said while referring to the cover art that features a drawing done with lipstick, a kiss print and a dead cockroach. “I didn’t draw the roach. The roach is real.”
“I was just rebelling because I was working on Daydream, and I was doing, like, ‘Always Be My Baby’ and ‘Fantasy,’ and those kind of songs, and I loved doing that,” she said. “But at the end of the night, when the band was still there, I’d say, ‘Can you play, like, [vocalizes]?’ You know, just play this so that I can get out of my head.”
According to Questlove, “It’s her best record.”
When it comes to releasing the record, she told Fallon, “I just want to say I don’t know which record label this is owned by. I don’t think it’s any of them because it’s just the way that it went down, but let’s discuss. It was never released.”
“I always regretted not putting it out, but they kind of stopped me at that point,” she said. “You know, it was Sony at the time. We love the Sony now, but back then… a little controlling.”
“We can put it out, yes, on Jimmy Fallon records,” she added.
Fans Are Eager to Hear Carey’s Grunge Music
When Carey sat down for a chat on “The Tonight Show” and discussed her grunge album, fans reacted by claiming they wanted to hear what it’s all about. While they were given a little sample thanks to Fallon, they definitely want more.
“That unreleased song from Chick, it’s SO GOOD!! I hope she’ll be able to release it one day,” one person said in the comments of her interview video.
Someone else wrote, “She is such a FORCE-a true musical genius!!! That she can even master Rock is a true testament to her versatility and magic. Her new album is already sinking its way into my soul. Thank you Mariah for being.”
Another person had a prediction, writing, “I think she’s gonna release the grunge album next year, she’s giving it more and more spotlight.”
Carey Has Previously Talked About Releasing Her Grunge Album

“People have been asking me about it, and it’s something that I love so much,” she told People in December 2024. “And we might see it in 2025, probably a little bit later than that.”
