Colombian superstar singer, songwriter, dancer, record producer, and television personality Shakira has revealed how she got through her breakup with her ex-partner, the former Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué.
Former “The Voice” coach Shakira, 49, was with Piqué, 39 (he is exactly ten years her junior, to the day), for 12 years, from 2010 until 2022.
The couple had two children together, both of whom are boys. Milan was born in 2013 (he’s now 13) and Sasha was born in 2015 (he’s now 11).
In a recent chat with People, Shakira revealed it was being a mother to her two sons that got her through the breakup with Piqué.
Shakira Realized ‘Motherhood Makes You Strong’ After Her Breakup
GettyShakira got candid with People for the publication’s cover story this week. She spoke vulnerably about her breakup with Gerard Piqué.
The star said, “When your world collapses, you have to get up and pay the bills and still prepare breakfast and take your kids to school. Life needs to go on.”
“Hips Don’t Lie” singer Shakira went on. She described how being a mother to Milan and Sasha helped her to get on with life. She said, “Motherhood makes you strong. The moment I became a mother, I saw life through a different perspective, and my kids are not only the best thing that happened to me, but I’ve learned so much from them every day.”
She concluded, “Through those challenging moments, I discovered how resilient we all are.”
People asked Shakira if she saw herself in another relationship any time soon. She answered, “I’m just thinking of raising my kids. I don’t see that for now.”
She did, however, add a little caveat to that, saying, “Maybe when they [her children] are older.”
Shakira Is Currently Heavily Involved With the FIFA World Cup
Following her relationship with former Spain and Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, Shakira seemingly can’t escape the world of soccer.
Having previously recorded “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and recorded “La La La (Brazil 2014)” for the official album of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the star has now recorded the official song for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The tournament will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19. Shakira’s song for this year’s iteration of the competition is a joint effort with Nigerian singer Burna Boy. It’s called “Dai Dai.”
She’s set to make history at the event by co-headlining the inaugural World Cup Final halftime show on July 19 in Easter Rutherford, New Jersey.
Moreover, starting on June 13, the star is heading on a World Cup-themed tour around the United States.
The “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour” will take her to locations like California, Texas, Georgia, Florida, and New York. She’ll be performing her new music on the tour, which includes the official song of the World Cup.
We’re so glad Shakira dealt with her breakup positively. We wish her well with all of her World Cup-related activities over the next month or so. We also look forward to seeing her perform at the final.
