Photo: Tina Turner Memorial Statue Causes a Stir Among Fans

Brownsville, Tennessee recently unveiled a huge new statue honoring Tina Turner, and yep, fans are talking; though not all of it is praise. The “Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll,” who passed away in 2023 at age 83, left a legacy so big it’s hard to capture in bronze. Brownsville wanted to celebrate their hometown legend, and Atlanta-based artist Fred Ajanogha delivered…well, something. The statue definitely screams Tina’s iconic ’80s vibe (big hair, short dress, and all) but fans say the resemblance isn’t quite hitting the mark.

Honoring a Legend

The statue stands near the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center, close to where Tina grew up, according to AP News. At 10 feet tall, it’s meant to capture her energy and stage presence, with one hand gripping a microphone like she’s about to belt a hit. Ajanogha says he envisioned her hair as “the mane of a lion,” which…fans have opinions about. Locals see it as a proud tribute, and the intention is clear: Tina Turner deserves a monumental send-off in her hometown.

Fan Reactions Cause Debate

On social media (specifically this Reddit thread), the statue has sparked everything from playful jokes to serious critiques, showing just how invested people are in honoring her correctly. And those reactions are mixed… and by mixed, we mean mostly “wait, what?”

One commenter summed up the sentiment: “Although I like the gesture, I find the statue ugly.” Another fan agreed, bluntly adding, “There is such a thing as bad art.”

The hair, in particular, seems to be causing a stir. One commenter wrote, “Hair bigger than her torso,” while another ominously warned, “This won’t end well.” Fans are also debating proportions, facial features, and whether the statue captures the essence of Tina Turner at all.

Beyond the Backlash

Here’s the thing: statues are tricky. They’re not just art… they’re statements, conversation starters, and sometimes controversy magnets. Tina Turner’s energy and spirit are massive, so maybe it was always going to be hard to capture that in bronze. Fans’ reactions could spark a discussion about what makes a fitting tribute to a cultural icon. Whether the statue stands as-is or inspires a revision, it’s clear people care (deeply) about honoring Tina Turner in a way that feels true to her.

At the end of the day, the statue may not be perfect, but it’s opening a conversation about how we celebrate legends. And honestly? Tina would probably have laughed at the debate, big hair and all.
