Hot Chocolate Musician Who Wrote ‘You Sexy Thing’ Passes at 78 — Our Hearts Go Out

One of the men responsible for writing the iconic disco hit “You Sexy Thing” has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

Tony Wilson was a member of the British soul and funk band Hot Chocolate from 1968 until 1975. A founding member of the group, he was a vocalist, songwriter, and bass guitarist.

He formed the group with vocalist Errol Brown, percussionist Patrick Olive, guitarist Franklyn De Allie, and drummer Jim King.

According to The Sun U.S., he died in his native Trinidad on Friday, April 24. The publication says his daughter wrote on Facebook, “Dad left us today, April 24th 2026. He left a lot of music behind…forever and ever.”

His daughter’s post continued, “I am thankful that on Friday 17th during our conscious talk time he was led to the Lord with understanding.”

It went on, “Some mornings later he asked for prayers. He said that he was leaving.”

The post concluded, “The peace that I have is knowing that his soul escaped. He is in and at peace.”

Wilson’s passing is a big loss to the music world, as he was one of the minds behind some truly memorable songs.

Anthony “Tony” Wilson is responsible for a plethora of huge disco, soul, and funk hits.

As a songwriter, along with Errol Brown, he co-wrote the Hot Chocolate tracks “Love Is Life,” “Brother Louie,” “Emma,” and the iconic aforementioned “You Sexy Thing.”

“You Sexy Thing” was the second single from Hot Chocolate’s self-titled second album. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart in November 1975, then peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 1976.

The song is often used in commercials (such as one for Burger King in 1999) and promotional material, and it famously gained significant notability after being prominently featured in Peter Cattaneo’s 1997 comedy movie “The Full Monty.”

Wilson Also Had a Notable Post-Hot Chocolate Career

Following his memorable seven-year stint in Hot Chocolate, Tony Wilson went on to have a notable career than included some solo work.

He released three albums; 1976’s “I Like Your Style,” 1979’s “Catch One,” and 1988’s “Walking the Highwire.”

Wilson was also asked to write a song for Bill Haley for his album in 1979. He came up with “Everyone Can Rock and Roll,” which Haley loved so much that, not only did it feature on his album, it became the album’s title.

Per Discogs, he also worked with the groups Derek Lawrence Statement, Focus Three, Moving Emotion, New Soul Brothers, The Corduroys, The Five Flames, The Soul Brothers, and The Souvenirs, in various capacities.

All things considered, Wilson released three albums, 24 singles and EPs, and five compilations. He has more than 701 musical credits to his name in total.

We’d like to send our heartfelt condolences to Tony Wilson’s family as they mourn his sad passing. He will undoubtedly always be fondly remembered in the music industry and beyond. May he rest in eternal peace.
