Woman Finds Grammy-Winning Singer’s Family Photos at Goodwill — ‘It Feels Surreal’

Thrift store shoppers are always hoping to find a treasure, and that’s just what happened to one woman who was recently checking out the shelves at Goodwill. What was surely just meant to be a normal trip to the store ended up being a viral-worthy experience after she found a Grammy-winning singer’s family photos.

“When Hannah Peters, who goes by @whatshannahinto on TikTok, picked up a stack of old photographs at Goodwill, she assumed they were just another family’s forgotten memories left behind,” according to People.

“Something about them caught my eye and I just felt like they had a really personal, homey vibe,” Peters told People. “At first, I didn’t think much of it, I just felt sad seeing someone’s family memories sitting there, and I thought it was worth sharing.”

Making a quick video featuring the photos, Peters then posted the content on TikTok where it quickly caught the attention of music-lovers who noticed something interesting about the images.

“This casually being Jill Scott 😭,” one social media user commented on Peters’ TikTok post.

“Okay! So I’m not crazy — THAT IS Jill Scott! 😳😳😳,” someone else added.

Another person wrote, “That cannot be THE Jill Scott 🥺🥺 are those fr her childhood pics 😭😭😭😭.”

People notes that Peters wasn’t initially convinced, “[b]ut as more comments poured in, she took a closer look at the photos and realized the internet might be right. The faces in the pictures she had found at Goodwill … appeared to belong to Grammy-winning singer Jill Scott, 53,” who has, in fact, won three Grammy Awards and received a total of 14 nominations.

Peters told People she “felt a mix of surprise, excitement, and responsibility to make sure they were safe,” which is why Peters returned to Goodwill to purchase the photos that were still there.

Back online, the news made its way to Scott’s team who contacted Peters to see if she would return the photo to the singer, which Peters is now trying to do.

“It feels surreal,” Peters admitted. “What started as a simple, sad discovery at a thrift store turned into something that resonated with so many people online. It also showed me how social media can connect people in unexpected ways…”

The news of the photos did, indeed, reach Scott who posted a message on X, writing, “How does one’s personal pictures end up in a Goodwill? Welp, moving to a new home. My Mommy moved. We’re all grateful to get the pics back. I’ll let you know when they arrive. Thanks again.”
