It’s a heavy weekend for the streamers, with some perfect fare for Mother’s Day celebrations everywhere. Friday features a Sam Raimi horror revival, a Sally Field tearjerker co-starring an octopus, a Mozart-vs.-Salieri prestige drama, an 18-queen drag tournament and an Italian vineyard rom-com. Saturday is comparatively quiet, but Sunday closes the weekend with Netflix’s biggest live comedy event of the year — Kevin Hart getting roasted in the hot seat at the Kia Forum.
In other words, this is a weekend with something for everyone in the household and almost nothing in common across the lineup. Here are the seven best new arrivals worth carving out time for between brunch reservations and the obligatory time with Mom.
“Send Help” (Hulu/Disney+, May 7)
Sam Raimi’s first real horror outing in 15 years quietly hit streaming May 7 and remains the loudest new arrival of the month. Rachel McAdams plays a put-upon corporate strategist who survives a plane crash with her tech-bro boss (Dylan O’Brien); the deserted island that follows turns into a giddy, blood-streaked battle of wills. Regina George would be horrified — and McAdams has rarely been better. Currently sitting at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Remarkably Bright Creatures” (Netflix, May 8)
GettySally Field plays Tova, a quietly grieving Puget Sound widow scrubbing tanks on the aquarium night shift, where she strikes up an unlikely friendship with a particularly perceptive giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus. Lewis Pullman co-stars as Cameron, a musician whose vehicle breaks down as he’s passing through town. He forms a unique bond with Tova when he gets a job working with her so he can save up for repairs. Adapted from Shelby Van Pelt’s bestseller — and a Mother’s Day lock if there ever was one.
“Amadeus” (Starz, May 8)
Will Sharpe is Mozart, Paul Bettany is Salieri and the long-anticipated prestige limited series finally lands stateside Friday after debuting on Sky in the U.K. last December. Prepare thyselves for five episodes of court intrigue, professional jealousy and powdered wigs from screenwriter Joe Barton, reimagining Peter Shaffer’s 1979 stage classic. Currently sitting at 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 11” (Paramount+, May 8)
Mama Ru returns with the Tournament of All Stars format and 18 fan-favorite queens — including Kennedy Davenport, Crystal Methyd, Vivacious, Mystique Summers and Silky Nutmeg Ganache — bracketed into three groups of six for a $200,000 prize and a Hall of Fame spot. A two-episode premiere drops Friday alongside the companion series “Untucked.”
“Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” (PVOD, May 5)
Samara Weaving is back, joined this time by Kathryn Newton as her estranged sister, plus Sarah Michelle Gellar, “The Pitt” fan fave Shawn Hatosy, Elijah Wood and a delightfully sinister David Cronenberg as the new in-laws hunting them. Same wedding-night-from-hell DNA as the original, with a meaner sense of humor and four rival families instead of one.
“The Roast of Kevin Hart” (Netflix, May 10, live)
Netflix’s live comedy machine is set to feature one of its biggest targets yet. Shane Gillis hosts the Kia Forum event Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, capping the streamer’s weeklong “Netflix Is a Joke Fest” with a roast of the man who’s spent the last decade roasting everyone else. The full dais hasn’t yet been announced, so prepare yourself for loads of surprises.
“No Place to Be Single” (Prime Video, May 8)
Amazon’s Italian-language Prime Original is “Pride and Prejudice” by way of “Mamma Mia!” by way of the world’s most photogenic Chianti vineyard. Matilde Gioli stars as Elisa, a single mom running her family’s wine estate and conspicuously not looking for love — until a long-lost childhood friend (Cristiano Caccamo) turns up to complicate things. Grab mom and pour a little rosé.
