Chris Hemsworth opened up about his father Craig Hemsworth’s recent Alzheimer’s diagnosis, revealing that it has forced him to slow down.
Chris Hemsworth Opens Up About His Dad’s Alzheimer’s
The “Thor” actor, 42, told The Guardian in an interview on Tuesday, February 3, “My appetite for racing forward has really been reined in.”
“I’ve become more aware of the fragility of things. You start thinking, ‘My dad won’t be here for ever.’ And my kids are now 11 and 13,” he explained. “Those nights where they’d fight over sleeping in our bed – suddenly they’re not happening any more.”
Hemsworth—who shares daughter India Rose and twin sons Sasha and Tristan with wife Elsa Pataky—first revealed his father’s diagnosis in their road trip documentary, “Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember,” which premiered on Disney+ in November 2025, according to Us Weekly.
At the time, the “Avengers” star shared that Craig’s symptoms began “in the last two years,” adding that he was diagnosed with “early-stage Alzheimer’s.”
“It’s so easy to take our parents for granted. I feel I’ve been so busy I haven’t spent as much time with my dad as I would want to … and there was the diagnosis,” he explained. “He has early-stage Alzheimer’s and there’s definitely good days and bad days.”
Chris Hemsworth Has a Heightened Chance of Developing Alzheimer’s
In the 2022 documentary series “Limitless,” Hemsworth disclosed that his maternal grandfather also suffered from Alzheimer’s. He learned that he has a heightened risk of Alzheimer’s because he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene.
“I wondered if I was letting people too far in,” he told The Guardian on Tuesday of his decision to go public with the health news. “Are they no longer going to believe in the action star or the Marvel character? And do I want people to know my fears and insecurities to this level?”
According to Hemsworth, whose brothers Liam Hemsworth and Luke Hemsworth are also well-known actors, explained that he asked his father’s approval before going public with the news.
“It was an interesting thing to even consider,” he said, according to Esquire. “There was a lot of, as you’d expect, apprehension and concern about how will this be perceived or portrayed? I don’t want to feel like I’m manipulating any of it in any sense, so I asked him: ‘What did you think? What are your feelings about this?’ And he expressed a huge amount of enthusiasm to do it.”
