Chuck Negron, founding member of Three Dog Night, passed away at age 83 at his home in California on Monday, February 2.
While his cause of death is unclear, Negron battled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, for nearly 30 years, Deadline reported.
According to his obituary, Negron continued to tour until the COVID-19 pandemic “sidelined him permanently.”
“Touring became impossibly unsafe with his condition,” the obit read. “In his final months, he battled heart failure in addition to COPD. Chuck Negron was a testament to never giving up – persevering through everything life throws at you, everything you may throw at yourself, and striving on.”
Three Dog Night Shared the Tragic News
Danny Hutton, who was estranged from Negron for decades before “burying the hatchet” in 2025, shared the tragic news to their fans.
“I received the news today that my former bandmate from Three Dog Night, Chuck Negron, passed away peacefully at his home,” Hutton shared via the band’s official Facebook page. “When Chuck left the band 40 years ago, we rarely spoke and lost touch for much of that time. Five months ago, his wife Ami called to tell me he was very sick, and I decided I should go see him.”
Hutton continued, “When I arrived at his house, we hugged, cried, reminisced, and shared many stories. In that moment, we realized how much time had been lost by not being in each other’s lives. It was a beautiful and deeply meaningful reunion.”
“Besides being a phenomenal singer, Chuck was a good college basketball player and had a great sense of humor,” he added. “I will always be grateful for the music we made together.”
Hutton and Negron, along with Cory Wells, founded the American rock band in 1967. The band gained popularity following their debut album with songs such as “Nobody”, “Try A Little Tenderness”, and “One.”
“Through his six decades of success, and all the ups-and-downs, his large, unconventional family was most important to him,” his obituary read.
