Filipino personality and the matriarch of the prominent Barretto entertainment family has passed away at the age of 89. Estrella “Inday” Barretto, who has been in ill health for a number of weeks, died on Thursday evening in her home country of the Philippines.
No further details about her cause of death have been released by her relatives at this time.
Inday Barretto Passes Away in Hospital at the Age of 89
Inday’s son Joaquin Barretto, otherwise known as JJ, confirmed the news of her death on his personal Facebook account. Posting a picture of a candle against a black background, he wrote, “Rest in peace, Mom. I love you.”
Meanwhile, her daughter Claudine Barretto also took to social media to announce that her mother had passed and pay tribute to her. She posted a video of some of her final moments with Inday on Instagram, where she can be seen holding her hand and exchanging words with the family matriarch.
Claudine’s post was accompanied by a caption that read, “Mommy. We’re gonna be okay, I promise!”
No other details were revealed but Joaquin’s Instagram account has shared a number of posts in recent weeks showing Inday in hospital. Over the course of the last few days, he revealed that her condition has been worsening and that she was being transferred to the ICU.
Several followers on Joaquin’s Facebook page posted their own messages of support. One wrote, “I am so sorry to hear about your mom. My deepest sympathies and prayers to you and your family as you go through this difficult time.”
Another added, “Prayers for your Mom and condolences to your family. I hope your happier memories somehow sustain you during this difficult time.”
The Barretto Family Is Famous for a Long-Running Feud
The Barretto family is made up of a number of siblings that Inday had with her husband Miguel Alvir Barretto. These include a trio of sisters who are successful actors in the Philippines — Julia Barretto, Claudine Barretto, and Gretchen Barretto.
However, various members of the family, which also includes Joaquin and other siblings and nieces, have been involved in a feud for several years since the death of their father in 2019. This culminated in a row that broke out at Miguel’s wake following his funeral.
Her last public appearance came in 2025 when she took part in an interview with actor and comedian Ogie Diaz when she seemingly criticized some members of her family.
